Somalia's first president, Aden Abdulle Osman, has died aged 99 in a Kenyan hospital where he had been in a coma.

He was also the first African leader to voluntarily relinquish his post after he lost the 1967 presidential election - Somalia's last democratic poll.

Siad Barre seized power two years later and since he was ousted in 1991 rival warlords have fought for control.

Mr Osman was a well-respected leader and emerged as an elder statesman in attempts to establish lasting peace.

His family says he was very unhappy with the current crisis and his dream was to see Somalia attain peace and stability.

Mr Osman rose to prominence as a nationalist politician in the 1950s.

He was elected head of state when the former British and Italian Somali colonies joined to form the Republic of Somalia in 1960.

Some Somali leaders have remembered him as a simple, down-to-earth person.

As you can see from this thread, when you have people who are clearly denying history, how are you able to work with them let alone govern them.

Two points Abdulahi Ciise was an interim PM of the Italian Somalia for a period before independence before Aden Cade was elected as a president of an independent Somalia. They didn't hold the office at the same time.

Two During that time too much corruption made the country an stable for the military to step on which had a lot of support. If there was less corruption maybe we wouldn't have had the coup and we would be the best nation in Africa today.

I was in Jilib, 1966-67. Meat of any kind was one shilling a kilo. Eggs were kumi-kumi, the big ones from the white Italian chickens were kumi-tano.
The Gosha and Mushunguli were not welcome in Kismayu, but, for the most part, folks ignored clan and worked together. Morale and a sense of nationalism seemed high. But....

The only thing I ever heard about the regional educational officer was that he sold the books and educational supplies donated by a USAID ship right after Bechtel completed the initial dock at the Kismayu port. Us teachers in the Lower Jubba were supposed to have had them, but they went to Kenya instead.

The headmaster at my school lived in the only government-supplied house, but never showed up a single day at the school. He was pointed out to me, but we were never introduced.

I was told that the PC construction volunteers who built the schools had to triple their orders of cement to complete any project. Bribes in kind were collected all along the way.

Hirsi Magan Isse was already greatly discouraged when I saw him in Mog in 1966. I'm sure he was aware of the corruption, nepotism, etc., but it seemed to me that he felt more excluded from the government than anything else. Of course, he ended up in early opposition to the Kacaan.

I think there was more to it than just the corruption.

Let me correct you here.

Under Cabdullahi Ciise and Aden Cabdulle the economy of Somalia was the most developed in Africa and it was competing with European and Japanese economies. The years those two men held power were truly the "golden years" of Somalia.

When the military dictatorship took over the economy was rendered useless. All the hard work of the previous democratic government went to waste. You need bags of money just to buy groceries. This was because the Kacaan regime borrowed millions of dollars of "foreign aid" which was essentially debt. As we all know debt has interest and it increased to 4 billion shillings by 1975 which equalled the earnings from seventy-five years' worth of banana exports. The Kacaan regimes reason for borrowing large amount of money was to "build the country" and "build the army". Ultimately the economy stagnated and went into decline and there were storages of imported goods during the Kacaan regimes take over. This was not present in the democratic government 1950-1969.

The economy now is even higher the economy during the Kacaan regime's rule.
