Following a steady improvement in the recent years, the number of women joining the police increased.
Likewise, promotions on merit of the policewomen already serving the force got up. Today, the commander of the police force, Major General Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud concluded promotions ceremony at Gen Kaahiye Police Institute in Mogadishu where outstanding policewomen ascended to higher posts in the force.
Long serving Faadumo Hassan Mohamed (Faadumo Neero) was promoted to the rank of Colonel.
Faadumo joined the Somali police force in 1971 in which she has held different posts over the years the latest post she held being the lead of the police-civil integration.
Faadumo served different parts of the country. History is now written as she becomes the first ever policewoman to ascend to the status of Colonel.
Upon getting the promotion, Faadumo spoke to reporters in Mogadishu to express her joyous feelings when her story is written in the pages of history.
'' I take this opportunity to thank the commander of the police force as he gives back to the Somali women. He is an individual who serves justice.
The policewomen were few in number in the past but now they have increased; we are almost one thousand in number at presence.'' Colonel Faadumo said.
Also ascended in ranks are Idil Abdullahi Hassan and Rahma Salaad Mohamed who rose to the rank of Captain.
They were excited about their promotion and thanked the commandant of the police force for appreciating their merit and endeavor of which they were promoted.
'"Policewomen were spotted on the 20th December in the past when celebrating for the commemoration of the anniversary when the force was first constituted. But at presence we share duties with colleague policemen thanks to the encouragement of Commandant Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud''. Captain Rahma reiterated.
Commandant Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud said those policewomen who were promoted have shown dedication in their day to day work as police officers and achieved the promotions on sheer merit.
