Midgaan/Madeban name?

Postby Iqsom » Sun Feb 05, 2017 5:20 pm

So i came across a collection of photographs of somalis by a french anthropologist/geographer taken ca 1890 in present day Somaliland it seems. The people in the pictures are of various clans. In one of them a young woman of the midgaan clan has an unusual name (to me), Samawota Donati. Now keep in mind this guy was french so he would mess up the names a bit, for example a man named Duale he would write Duali. But with this womans name, the only change perhaps could be from donati to donate, but the name is still unique. Have you guys ever heard of a somali woman named samawota? Or someone with the surname donati/donate? IF this is an old real midgaan name, then that might mean that one of the contributing factors to their discrimination & marginalization could be because they're different from the rest of the somalis. I know they have their own language that they tried to keep to themselves & I recall someone saying they could have been the "original" Somalis or inhabitants of Somalia.
Interesting stuff! :leon: :ohhh:

Typical Somali name. Also, she looks no different than the other woman in the picture. Somalis and their bs caste system.

You have no idea what you talking about. It's always funny when clueless people try to invent theories from thin air.

Samawada (Northern accent)/Samawado (Konfuur always use "O") is an ordinary Somali name.

Her father's name is Doonyale most likely.

Btw the 13 year old boy could be my grandfather, HooBariiska, CasualFarah or Timiro's.

Walee he is related to me one way or another wa billahi.

Walee if I had elders from that era who saw that picture I am 100% sure they would say hebel bu awoow uu aha.

I pay my respect to him.

Maybe you missed the point or can't read properly? I was clearly asking if anyone knew this name. Good thing you did though. Must be really old name. About the theories of midgaans, there is still speculations that they're different. Why do they have their own language? I'm genuinely fascinated, it's not ill will.

So you're HY abdallah isaaq. Grandfather is not that far away, you don't know if your grandfather was called Ahmed Hersi? :notsure: anyways you're lucky you have a potential relative there. There were some HA but no SM :(

Madhibaan is a clan within the Gaboye confederation. The other two are Muusa-Dheriyo and Reer Hule.

Amongst the Madhibaan, I think Maxaad (Maxamed) Barre is the largest sub-clan.

The Gabooye had a distinct language from the Anaas (Yibir). And to my understanding, these 2 clans are remnants of other ethnic groups who once roamed the plains in Horn of Africa.
