First if all, we are in the west. And Nigerians are proud to be black and they're striving in this country, most Somalis are just lazy pieces of trash that wanna complain about America but don't wanna go back home. And we do live in the same reality as "blacks", we live in America. And throughout my high school years I was friends with "blacks" and my few close friends go to college with me while the somalis who tried to be my friend in high school are working at Walmart when I go and pick up my groceries. Black is who I am, black is who somalis are. You're east African. You look in the mirror and see black. If you think otherwise you're a self hating nigga. And you say you don't share the same realities as "blacks" but I'm sure Saddiq at the gas station will watch you closely and jimmy and heather will think "what is this nigger doing in this neighborhood". Now ask yourself, how does my "somaliNess" connect myself to my land, culture, or history? If you're from east Africa and you're black, you're somali. And you know what they feel that if being black takes their culture? Just because we share skin color with AAs or other Africans doesn't mean we have the same values, cultures or live in the same reality as them. This doesn't mean we see ourselves as surperior, it just means we see ourselves as distinct.
So i agree with your Aunt. She is very much correct you are Somali not black. Black is an empty color abstract with no refrence attached to it, while your Somaliness on the other hand connects you to land, culture and history.
Lastly we understand the reality of discrimination and racism in the west, it's just not our identity. Racism and discrimination does not describe us. Ask yourself if the only difference is skin complexion and being at the bottom of every social economic indicator. Then how is that an identity?
There is no wonder why Somalis feel a sense of inadequaucy when it comes to the super-imposition of blackness. Because it takes them away from their claim to land, culture and history and renders them into homeless marginalized "other" with no refrence.

I'm not necessarily a negro, per say. I'm black. And I happen to be from Somalia. It's just that simple. And for the food, I never had somali food growing up because it tasted like shit so I just ate sandwiches, cereal, etc. And for the language, I just was never interested in learning it. Like for example, when I hear my pops and my mom talking in somali, I know what they're talking about but I can't just respond to them in somali. Plus, what is learning somali gonna do for your life?
