A Big government is known for being highly inefficient. They waste a lot of money on programs that simply don't work. For example, it is cheaper to send someone on welfare to Harvard with full tuition and room and board than it is to give them an average recipient check of $200.00. This is due to the fact that nearly all of the welfare program is overhead and little ends up in the pockets of the recipients.

Without big government, churches, neighbors, and other organizations would naturally step in to fill these roles and they can do it much more effectively than government can. When the government tries to fill this role other people back away and do not try to fulfill this need.

Without all the government waste, society could put those resources into businesses that are researching into science and technology fields so that we can create more high paying jobs.

Finally, charity should be voluntary. It is not a good idea to use brute force (i.e. a gun at your head), to make somebody do something good. If we aren't forcing people to be charitable, why do we need a big government?

I disagree. Govt is needed in the 21 st century to help the growing population. Right If I don't have a job, I can be guaranteed a 200 dollar check and 200 dollar food stamp If I needed. Churches or volunteers cannot guarantee me with sustenance. So we need big brother to give us a cushion to fall on.
