About half of Iranians are actually Azeri Turks. They are Shia though. Mashhad is their capital. It's the second largest city in Iran after Tehran. They also have their own oil rich country Azerbaijan. They are descendants of Qizilbash Turkic rulers of Iran (16 century) and still speak Turkish. They have close affinity to Turkey. If Iran opens base in Somalia, we will be dealing with a different flavor of Turks.

Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. Modern building are constructed by Turkish construction firms. Their airport is stunning:

After Erdogan's visit, Sudan became really assertive toward Egypt. Sudan just recalled its ambassador in Cairo. A week of mutual accusations is morphing now into actions.

Sudan's foreign ministry recalls ambassador to Egypt

04.01.2018

KHARTOUM, Sudan

Sudan’s ambassador to Egypt left Cairo Thursday, hours after his government recalled him, a Sudanese diplomat told Anadolu Agency.

The move comes amid a deepening row between the two neighbors.

The diplomat, who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed that Abdul-Mahmoud Abdel Halim had left Cairo and was on his way to Sudan, without providing further details.

Sudan summoned the ambassador for consultations, according to a statement issued Thursday by its Foreign Ministry.

Reacting to the news, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it learned of Sudan’s decision through its embassy in Khartoum.

Egypt is "comprehensively assessing the situation with a view to making the appropriate response", the ministry said.
