When you bear in mind that East Hararghe has a population of roughly four million, it is amazing to think that at least a million of those are of Somali origin. Similar to the Dirs, Darood, Gaaljecel, Hubeer, Dabarre etc. in Digil iyo Mirifle; the Afran Qallos you meet will identify as Oromos, but will tell you what their Qabil origins are when questioned. We should differentiate them from other Oromos and not be belligerent to anyone who claims to be Oromo as some are our Qabil brothers.

You think the Amhara would include the Noole name? The subclan in that are are Noole warra Oromo. How would Awraja Gurgura, Issa and Noole Oromo sound, when the name Oromo was banned?

Claim the city all you like this is fine. It’s not a matter of fighting for, most the people are mixed, you like it or not. It’s best that it is its own chartered city.

Trust me, there are plenty Noole, Issa mix families. Not as many as the mix with Gurgura, but he picture is there.

As the name suggests ,Babille Oromo are of hawiye descent.They completely absorbed the Karanle and Gugundhabe but have assimilated some sections of Geri koombe .For instance, the Girri Babile and Geri Jaarso clans of the Afran Qallo.Many Dir clans like Gurgura are semi-Oromised same are some sections of Absame I.e the weyteen and Baalcad.

As for the Ogaden,Smaller septs of Camar and Ree Cabdille live deep in Oromia most notably Balbalayti.They are semi-oromised but have retained kinship ties to their major clans in the Ogaden mainland.

A Dir friend of mine from Gure-Dhaamole told me a story about how they frequently clashed with Oromo .He said that it could have been easier to defeat the Oromo alone but they had assimilated Somali clans who hail from Ree Waafate/Cawlyahan .l met the guy in Kismayo in 2014 and told me about how many Somali branches joined the Oromo confederation after living with them for generation.I asked him whether these assimilation groups could speak Somali .He said they did speak Somali but it was thick accent and they were generally oromised .Somali men will go to their region and mostly they were welcomed and given a plot of land to farm.The men started families which eventually became clans after several generation and in that process ,they became Oromo through assimilation or adoption .

I just found out that a sub sub clan of Noole are Yabarre; not surprising considering how they, the Jidwaaq, Barsuug, Harar Hawiye, Akisho and Geri are not as prominent as they were in the distant past. Many have become Afran Qallo by the looks of it.

The unique thing about Gurgura is that their 'Gurgura' identity remains whether they live in the Oromo Zone or the Somali Zone due to their Xeer system, relatively larger population and a tradition of having one Ugaas. Even the ones who identify as Oromo in Eastern Hararghe Zone are not part of the Afran Qallo but state that they are the Oromo Gurguras. When their famous Ugaas Buux died, both Oromo and Somali speaking Gurguras were represented at his funeral.



The assimilation of some Ogadens into Oromo was not a one way process. You also had Oromos assimilating into Ogaden clan during their late 19th century expansion beyond the middle course of the Shabelle River.
