What is it with Afro Americans?

Not that I have any hate for them laakiin wtf man! Why do they claim the "American" part? If you see an asian person, they write "Asian" on their papers, not "Asian American" same with the Arab, they don't write "Arab Americans" Mad

Why do the African Americans think they are indigenous to this place? Somalida, if they were born here, and their parents were born here, it still wouldn't give them the right to say they are "Somali American". They are just Somali, a proud one waliba. When I asked my co-workers the question, they said "Well, good question... I don't know" Laughing

Arabs do call them selves Arab Americans especially since the 911 attacks.
The reason why they call themselves African Americans is because they don't know what African country they originate from, that and the fact that their original language and culture were stripped from them. The only thing they have in common is that they are all of African descent and were slaved in America. They are more culturally European/American than African.

Somalis have only been in America or Europe for just about a decade or so. Wait another 50/60 years or so, you'll see Somalis callin themselves Somali Americans.

Ciyaalka somaalida qarkood baa gaalnimo ku dhow, after what I have seen and heard about them.

I think it is mainly because many of them are not pure African. And also because they have lived in that continent for centuries. How can you claim an African identity if you don’t have a single connection to Africa? It’s like saying why don’t Brazilians call themselves Portuguese?

I have seen many Somalis who have abandoned their Somali identity. Some say they are Arabs, some Portuguese, some Ethiopian. So, I wouldn't use Somalis as an example in this context.

Don't mind me, I made the topic out of boredom. Asians have been here for decades and you don't see them adding "American". Whats the deal With the African Americans? They became American after slavery? And why do they think they are the only "black" race there is? Alot of them ask me, "do you have many black friends?" to them, black=African American... If black IS African American ONLY, than what are Somalis and any other African country for that fact? Rolling Eyes

San Dheer you are WRONG; scientificaly speaking atleast. There was a blood test conducted of random willing African Americans in Harlem and it found out to be that they are 98.7% closely related to their african relatives.

San Dheer wrote, "I think it is mainly because many of them are not pure African"

Are you serious? Have you forgoten you come from an area where the MOST mixing on Earth occurred ( East Africa). So how dose one say 'pure africans' when we as East Africans are far more mixed than what they have been in the last 400 years? The truth of the matter is, there isnt ANY pure Africans, we are all mixed with something...and don't let skin tone be the deciding factor, even the darkest Africans have tainted blood in them.

Anyways, living in the BIG CITY ( new york city) has shown me that African Americans weren't just raped physically but mentally aswell. The men are boys and the women raise children as father and mother since the 'boys' aren't around to step up, thus, creating a vicious cycle of poverty and inner hate of oneself. "A women can not teach a boy how to become a man, only a man can teach a man how to be a man." --Tupac shakur

I used to recall a time as a child growing up in LA's not so safe neighbourhoods when "African Americans" used to call me "hey African booty scratcher" and i would look at them like duhh, I am African and i do scratch my booty. They would look so dumb founded cause they REALLY thought being African meant it was an insult. Who do i blame? I blame hollywood for brainwashing them. They never show the best parts of Africa on TV only the poor starving kids.

Anyways, keep up the good work Sexy-Kitten, it seems you and your African American friends had a HEATED debate at work in Wendy's.

Erifag, you're waaaaaaaaaay off topic you confused squirrel.. Re-read the thread and tell me what your opinion is, I didn't ask you to tell me how your classmates treated you. Laughing

DD,

First, I was at work, I went to the lobby where many of my co-workers were talking about "black power, black race, African Americans this, African Americans that".. so I asked them the question I posted above, and they couldn't answer. So, I figured why not ask my fellow Somalinet forumers. Keep in mind though, I did this when I was bored.. Laughing

Chris Tucker, roots were traced back to a tribe of Africans in Angola....Oprah Winfrey collapsing in tears after being handed a deed between a white Mississippi landowner named Watson, and one of her ancestors and he told her..Her genetic signature is very common in West Africa...It was very fascinating. You won’t find a more moving moment on television ....Check your local listing here...
