Bolivia Police Arrest U.S. Citizen After Bombs Kills Two People

March 22 (Bloomberg) -- Bolivian police arrested a male U.S. citizen and a Uruguayan woman in connection with two hotel bombings in the capital that left two people dead and five wounded.

The blasts knocked down walls at two hotels where government officials stay and scattered bricks and cement across a 60-meter radius, shattering windows in nearby buildings, a statement on the government Web site said. The force of the blasts indicated the bombs were probably made from C-4 plastic explosives, rather than dynamite, the statement said.

The statement didn't say what organization was suspected of carrying out the bombings or give the identities of the suspects.

``The United States claims to fight terrorism, yet Americans come to put bombs in our hotels,'' Bolivian President Evo Morales said at a ceremony in the eastern city of Santa Cruz, in comments broadcast by La Paz-based Radio Panamericana. ``This is an attack on Bolivian democracy.''

The police force declared a state of emergency, reinforcing security at the La Paz airport, bus stations and power plants, in addition to patrolling the streets of the capital, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sara Vargas said in a phone interview from La Paz.

It comes as no surprise that the deplorable hotel bombings were probably the evil doings of American C.I.A. agents in a bid to destabilise Bolivia and undermine the leadership of Evo Morales. Hawkish U.S. neo-cons have made no secrets about their enmity toward the democratically elected left-wing Socialist Presidents: Evo Morales & his Venezuelan comrade Hugo Chavez whom they attempted a disastrous coup against in mid 2002.

U.S. imperialists have long sought to undermine the right of the Latin American peoples to elect into government whomsoever they want.

La Paz — Leftist President Evo Morales said Tuesday the U.S. government had organized groups to kill him and said he believed Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's assertion that Washington was preparing to overthrow his administration.

“I've been informed recently how the U.S. had organized teams — groups to persecute Evo Morales, to kill Evo Morales. They haven't been able to and now we're organized, from unions to this political party and they can't stop us anymore,” Mr. Morales said, without giving more details.

The U.S. Embassy in Bolivia called the charges “baseless.”

“We're supporting democracy in Bolivia in a consistent manner and are looking for a constructive relationship with the Bolivian government based on dignity, mutual respect and common interests,” the Embassy said in a statement Tuesday.

Mr. Chavez said during a visit to Bolivia last week that the U.S. government was plotting to overthrow Mr. Morales. His comments came after U.S. President George W. Bush said he was “concerned about the erosion of democracy” in Bolivia and Venezuela.

“I want you to know that what my colleague Chavez said is no lie,” Mr. Morales told reporters while inaugurating a Cuban-funded program to provide free eye surgeries in the town of Escoma, about 125 miles west of La Paz. “These historical enemies, that privatized our natural resources, especially petroleum, are conspiring, not against Evo Morales but against the changes that we've started.”

Mr. Morales, who was elected in December, nationalized Bolivia's natural gas industry earlier this month and has pledged to fight corruption and pull the poor Andean nation out of poverty.

Since taking office, Mr. Morales has had tense relations with the U.S. government, which he frequently refers to as the “empire.” He has also accused unnamed foreign energy companies of plotting against him, although he has not presented any proof.

Mr. Chavez has also repeatedly accused the United States of trying to overthrow him to seize his country's vast oil reserves.
