Phobia

Postby Lil_Cutie.. » Fri Apr 07, 2006 9:21 am

On my way to met some friends this morning I saw this lady in the train station. She was bending down in the corner near the ticket office clutching her bag. She was in her mid-30's deliriously in tears and looked well 'groomed' at first I took no notice ''It's rude to stare''.

But as I got closer and closer, I couldn't help but look at her bright red face with deep red scars that looked like scratches. At first I thought she got mugged. But as I watched on by, she was shaking and franticly trying to open her bag. She was grabbing it so hard but at the same time she was trying to let loose to open it.
She eventually dug up a pair of white rubber gloves put them on and threw a used pair near her away. With the gloves on I immediately clocked on to the situation. Still clutching her bag with her knees, she slapped her face with her two hands and started dusting herself.

I started thinking about this programme I once watched about Phobia but this time I actually witnessed an extreme case up personal. I felt uneasy queuing up for my ticket and just watching her, and everyone else doing the same. So I approached her as she made eye contact and gave me a broken smile. As I was about to speak she pulled out a pair of gloves and asked me to put them on and help her up. So I did.
Luckily another man came up form behind me, thanked me and took over. He was wearing a budge that said ''FearFighter CCBT''

London train stations are filthy especially the underground/tube stations. This woman obviously had an anxiety of dirt and this was a BIG step, a little extreme. At times even I feel disgusted and worry about the amount of dirt on me after I commute. But I sensed that she was more anxious to get on up and continue her journey. up

.Phobia List Categories.

Agoraphobia

(with panic attacks)(without panic attacks)
Irrational anxiety about being in places from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing.

Social phobia

Irrational anxiety elicited by exposure to certain types of social or performance situations, also leading to avoidance behavior.

Specific phobia

Persistent and irrational fear in the presence of some specific stimulus which commonly elicits avoidance of that stimulus, i.e., withdrawal.

It really set me thinking, really interested in what makes people trigger and what/how the panic button gets shot off.
Do you or anyone you know have a Phobia - Or suffers from any of the related categories above Question

From personal experience I know that most Americans I socialized with are suffering from Xenophobia. Whites, blacks, hispanics, aisans, u name it. This phopia is not visible unless the person is close to you and you are not from the race in question.

Xenophobia - a definition

Fear (phobia) of strangers (xeno-) and of the unknown. Both racism and homophobia are sometimes reduced to xenophobia. Dislike of foreigners. Often a dislike of representatives of a particular nation. The word Xenophobic is often used as a political insult against Racists, Isolationists, and Nationalists.

cute - thnx for the webster.

many ppl get disturbed and become afraid of the unknown when they see or interact with ppl who have different background (could be color, believes or anything) not necessarily racism or prejudice.
