The Blood That Was Shed" By Roda Rageh
The flag of Somaliland was hoisted with the dream and quest for justice of millions of Somalilanders and the blood of a few. It has come with the will of the people and will remain inshaAllah with the will of the people. However, never have I imagined that it will be threatened to evaporate in the hands of a mindless president like the ‘Tin Man’ in the ´Wizard of Oz` – a man who is a remnant of the brutal Siad Barre, one whose worldview is limited to few runs between Godka and the Headquarters of the NSS.
I remember when Siad Barre killed a senior civil servant, father and a decent man Jibril Amin for allegedly misappropriating some money which was no more than a tactic to hunt whoever he thought was not loyal to him. I remember when a decent man from Awadal Ali Hussein who was a senior civil servant, a high mined intellectual and a hard working man who was also once my boss – a man who was truly more Somalilander than anyone I know died miserably in Mogadishu because Abdullahi Ahmed Addo denied him a rightful treatment abroad for he challenged that greedy arrogant Addo at a time Addo was hoarding every penny collected by the Ministry of Finance. Ali Hussein Rahamuhulah held positions as a senior auditor, a customs officer and once the Accountant General. His challenge to save his country from a mercenary like Addo caused him to die in vain without any proper medical treatment.
My hat is always off to Mujahid Abdurahman Aw Ali who chose to stand for justice against all odds when he, like many of his peers, could have taken the easy and mercenary way to live symbiotically with Siad Barre. Ikram Haji Daood is a pious and loyal citizen of Somaliland and all of the people mentioned above and thousands more are from Awdal and decent patriotic people but instead of remembering and rewarding our decent Somalilanders in all its regions, our norm is to crown the hooligans who do not represent anyone but themselves. We have chosen to crown the cruel, brutal officer whose services know no other dignity than to harass people in a hole in the ground. Those who believed in him can now weep silently. The mindless in the Animal Farm who slandered Raqiya Omaar when she tried to educate the public about their voting rights may still be congratulating each other but those who were duped to give or sell their vote to him can now mull over the fact that they might have threatened their own Somaliland and hence might not get another chance to sell a vote to the devil.
Suleiman, (and I won´t deny him the `Nur` that he strives to achieve) needs to find Faith not in circling the Kabah but deeply in his heart. The term Gaal is an unyielding heartless self, concerned only for his good. Gaal typifies the character of ‘Kurtz’ in Conrad´s Heart of Darkness. If he chooses to be ‘Gaal’ rather than ‘Nur’ as he wishes to be known, then to the people of Somaliland he is nothing other than what King Leopold was to Congo. In spite of the 3 or so times he visited Mekkah, his heart is as dark as that of King Leopold. If he does not stop the revenge he is constantly taking on his people, when that eventually breaks his back, he will croak without dignity. His legacy will remain a stain and a dark spot in the history of Somaliland.
The guurti was supposed to be for the people. If the people do not trust them they will go for sure and will not remain. They no longer have the trust of the people. If they cannot understand the function of a constitution, they will be abolished even if that means rewriting the constitution itself.
If Dahir Riyale refuses, as he has already done many times, to appear before the Parliament, I am waiting to see what they are going to do. We all call for his impeachment, but how are they going to do it. How can they do their job when he flatly rejects to answer questions to anyone? The Parliament clearly was chosen for their credentials. They have failed once. Let us see if they can deliver something to stop this mindless menace. It seems to me that Dahir Riyale is saying to himself ‘Dameerkaan ku joogo dhuusadiisa maxaa iga galay’ but I can tell him that this donkey’s fart will be so nasty, he will opt walking.
In the mean time, we need to devise a plan to have 3000-4000 Somalilanders arrive in Somalialnd this summer because we need to find out what is going on in our country. It seems to me that nobody including the President has a job description or understands what his job is. So there might be an assignment for summer volunteers.
I am not concerned about the dreams and ambitions of Somalia because there is no Somalia but I am very concerned about a society that killed its best to bring the beast from the cold. How ironic! I wonder what would Muj. Lixle, Mohamed Ali, Adan Suleiman, Kood buur and the behind the scenes heroes like Ali Hussein would say about the end of the long struggle.
Long live Somaliland.
