West V Third World:

Not so long ago, I had a discussion or rather a talk with friends about this issue. Having kids in the West Vs the Third World and we couldn't agree on anything.

Why do you/would you have children?

For someone in the Third World, it;s obvious, it's not for the heck of it or for fun or to adore and watch them grow, it's simply an investment for the future, it's some kind of Social Security Fund. Basically it's a two way traffic, I raise you, you take care of me in old age and the cycle continues and the more kids you have the better chance of hefty retirement check. Boy's preference to girls contribute to this effect as boys are the sole providers whereas girls are the property of whoever weds them.

The West on the other hand do not rely on their kids as Social Security or 401K, or to benefit them in old age, they are a burden if anything. They raise them, pay their college and upon graduation, that is the last of them to be seen. If parents are lucky enough, their kids will see them settle in one of those rotting houses for dying seniors and will get a visitation confined to Christmas and/or Thanksgiving. What did they get in return? Nada, nothing. Some are even killed by their offsprings!!!

Anyways..not to Digress from the topic-- i would like to play the Devils advocate here.

I Disagree. I think the senior residence is a very practical way of taking care of your loving aging parents.I think you are just picking up on the negative stereotypical homes where in the news they talk of rotten residences & mistreatment! Seriously-- i would love my kids to send me in a good expensive retirement home.There is a difference. The best nurses--comfortable living, healthy activities to do. I agree--there is nothing better than your children nursing you in their homes,But that is very rare.There is no guarentee of this anyway.Most of our Somali brethrem-- have been abandoned in distant relatives homes-- completely mistreated & left to die in some small room, constantly partronized.I think residence homes are very practical--you are sorrounded by your fellow old seniors co-habitators whom u will feel comfortable rather than a house of full of partronizing Somali relatives--who backbite you in the next room about how Ajuuze you have turned into or that u have lost it! Not to mention the enormous neglect that goes on in Somali houses! No i rather have a comfortable nursing home where professional take care of me--who have more Naxriis than the average Somali relative! I would not mind the Eiid & Ramadhan visits too--for just much as my children find it troublesome to visit--do i find their 'visiting' inconvenient & troublesome! And Mister DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE --daughters with feeble statement u made up there---

Did u know 90% of children taking care of their aged parents are daughters??? A Somali grown up Son is incapable of washing the Xaar of his own child let alone his alzheimer ajuuse mother or father. NEVER-I say!!! Much worst--his own wife will not do that, she will do it for her mother, your mother in law! --(Given that the 'In-laws' bickering syndrome is well known amongst Humanity in general)! Wake up waryaa! if u are looking to have kids--think again! A daughter brings more love & bliss than a son.She is mother nature! The days where boys were valuable stock market value are long gone---we dont need them to go the jungle in the night & hunt food for us. No thank you---a simple Pizze ring will do! !


The irony of all this is--the son is usually the 'property' of the woman who marrying him. Especially in somali community!

^^u missed the whole point, dumbass. Putting your parents in nursing home and letting strangers tend to their every need is not taking care of your parents. Sending your parents to a home is possibly one of the greatest evils a child can do in my opinion...As a muslim, one of the things that can send you straight to hell or heaven is the way you treat your parents. Of course, since you are on Snet 24/7 isntead of going to the Masjid, you wouldn't anything about that.

I feel sorry for anyone who will be changing your diapers
when you are taken to the elderly care houses…

To you---You equate Nursing homse as 'neglect'! But it doesn't have to be that way.Advanced, modern parent might prefer the nursing to a hut where --your children mistreat you or neglect you.Unless u won the jakcpot & have the BEST daughter or son to take full care of you--then i suggesting a good 'expensive' nursing home.

PS: Correction--- Paradise lies under the legs of mothers, not just the union of 'parents' or to be precise, a father! So dont get some ideas & -- get encouraged by going about impregnating adoomos-- & produce little gay copy cat Lionheart, okey crazy habibiti? !

Next time, say you want to be objective. A true devil's advocate tries to show people both sides of the coin , not just the side they support.

It's always the head of the family who decides the residents/occupants of the house and I ain't seen a woman acting as a household head unless she is a widow, divorcee or is married to one softie mama's boy. Given that fact, most male would not entertain the idea of their in-laws being a burden to them. The man on the other hand (being the head of the household) can accomodate his aging parents and tell his Halimo to take good care of them.

As for Nursing Home, that is not appealing to anyone who has alternatives.

True i agree with your completely--before --it was the head of the house-- usually a 'man' yes--who called the shots. But as i said above--times are changing--in this mordern world --usually everything is 50/50---both women & men are working--& the man doesn't have that 'absolute' power that he has enjoyed throught century! No one in particular calls the shots. In fact -- i think in a way women call the shots--the Wife kicks out the hubby usually--the law is on her side! I mean--if u are talking about the confines of Somalia-- the country--i mean geographically--u are right--the practice is still the same.But here in the west-- as somalis are continuing to 'age' & blend in the 'West'--rules are changing walaal!
