You know both him and his cabinet ministers used to chew even during that time

What were these political reasons? I know barre was not the most religious somali so I would not be surprised but he must have had a good reason for banning it. besides any reason for banning khat can not be a bad reason. there are men in somalia who spend all their (and their wife's) earnings on khat when their kids are starving.
