Ethiopia prepared to invade Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya - Ethiopia is prepared to invade neighboring Somalia to defend its U.N.-backed government against what appeared to be an imminent attack by Islamic militiamen, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

The militiamen, who hold most of southern Somalia, deployed hundreds of fighters outside the town where the largely powerless government is based and said they planned to seize it.

"We have the responsibility to defend the border and the Somali government. We will crush them," Ethiopia's Minister of Information, Berhan Hailu, told The Associated Press.

Seizing the town of Baidoa would give the Islamic militia — which the United States has linked to al-Qaida — the uncontested authority over most of Somalia.

Somali transitional President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed is allied with Ethiopia, and has asked for its support. Ethiopia has intervened militarily in Somalia in the past, and hundreds of Ethiopian troops have been spotted along the countries' border in recent weeks.

The Somali Islamist militants are allied with Muslim separatists in the Oromo region of Ethiopia.

As a Somali, I am deeply disappointed that it has come down to this. Let us see if the Makhmaads can take on Ethiopia, the Somali government and the Puntlander forces.

AW's FINAL ANALYSIS: If the Ethiopians invade, the Makhmaad will be pushed back and defeated. However, the Ethiopians will NOT HOLD ground as they face a Somali insurgency.

POSITION: I am neutral as the Makhmaad's have degraded the Sacad militia in Southern Somalia. I am sure if they had NOT attacked the General AbdiQeybdiid's position, those Sacad militiamen would have eagerly confronted the Habash menace but now there is NO INCENTIVE to fight FOR the Makhmaad's mistake.

In the end, I will hope that the Ethiopians move back. The Makhmaad's have finally opened PANADORAs box.

The courts donÂ’t need to attack Baidoa, the local people and their militias will be enough to do the ground work. The government has managed to alienate the locals and has acted almost like an occupying force. Its days are numbered and Ethiopia is only there for show. They know if they invade Somalia and engage in a war there especially without international backing, there will be wars waged on it from every corner.

i dont think that amxaaro will use their air cover,not yet

maxkamadaa can eassily take over baydaboi only if they also keep using their public support for so far they did good job, i heard that 150 millitys surrended, thats a good begin and i hope the rest will follow
