My aunt, mother and I went somewhere the other day. Someone stopped and asked us if we were from Ethiopia, so my mother answered and said..No,Somalia. Then, my aunt chimes in do you know where that is? So, she answer's Yes, isn't that where all the war was. Then my aunt goes, yes but we are not from that part, we're from the North.


My dhibic is, why put in all that effort to seperate yourself to a complete and total stranger? Forget about that, my ajnabi friends don't know where in Somalia Im from. They are ajnabi, I refuse to dog out the rest of my country.



Why go through all trouble, it's kind of a disgrace.

When people ask me I say I am an Isak and not part of the savages you see killing each other all over the place. "here" I say pulling out a map I carry with me all the time " We are called Somaliland and they are called Somalia. They starve and we are rich. If I am too bored to be bothered with all above I just say I am from Bongo Bongo Land; you know near Bangwanaland and give them an Eddie Murphy smile. they pretend they know where it is. The embarrassment and the pity and the confusion on semi-literate Euro faces is a picture to behold.

When i say i'm from Somalia, i always add "East Africa" because many people think i'm saying Samoa. That's about as far i'm willing to go separate myself from any1 else. The truth is, even Ethiopians and Kenyans, who are our neighbors, couldn't care less where in Somalia any of us are from. To them, we are all trouble makers who hate each other's guts because of qabiil.

Your aunt has a dhibic there, when you believe that you have struggled enough to redeem yourself from an association of lunies and savages, and you put your sh!t together, to be linked to the same thing that reeks of barbarity is a little disheartening to say the least and discrediting at most. It's human nature to want to be applauded for your successes no matter how significant it is and to deny that is totally unacceptable.

I bet she wouldn't have said that if the South were doing something worthwhile with their wretched lives

lol@they are poor and we are rich. Funny thing first thing I learned about Somali friend was darot and haweya and I learned after that how they hate each other. So once i sawsomali to be friendly I say " hey are you daroot or haweyah" and he would say no no they go ong details I don't even understand. Then I learned more and more.

Hey you just reminded me. The most wonderful `country askers' I ever came across were the Iraqis.

Their TV always showed reams of African presidents visiting Saddam - Mozambique, Zambia, Guinea etc non-stop.

So the next morning the whole town will ask you "inta min Mozambeeq"?(are you from Mozambique) It was just too annoying because you cvould get asked same question ten times a day so we learnt just to say "yes" . The answer inevitably came back " It is all good. that too is an Arab country"

And sometimes we will say "La yubbe ani min Nimsa"(No mate I am from Austria" - made no bleeding difference - hammeyna quddur Arabi(it too is an Arab country) they thought every place was somehow Arab country.


The rest of the year you were just Sudani - you can tell them Somali day in day out for years and it will get you nowhere " Akh Sudani moo?"(Brother from Sudan isnt it"?

The curious innocence was actually quaintg in its own way.

loooool Kuwaiti guy was almost beaten up, because he asked Somali "enta sudani" (are you sudanesse) The Somali said " La ana Somali" then the Kuwaiti guy went " yoba kella wahed" (well, they're all same). The Somali was pissed off and said " how we are same? We're from different country" then he went " Kolena abeeda Allah bess ento abeed" (We're all Allah's servants but you're abeed-note here abeed could be just you are black), Somali got upset and almost slapped him in the face

Even the ajnabiga yaa kala jira,still I can't bring myself to do it.
Maybe if I were asked, by a neighbour let's say Ethiopian/Eritrean and they specifically sked what part Id say Somaliland.


Luggoyo and Galol...Differntiation amongst each other is fine, that's what makes us Somali isn''t it....lakiinse, amongst others we should stand our ground.
