The SPLIT of Union of Islamic Courts. What is Next?????

Unveiling Somalia's Islamists

BBC

The Islamist alliance, the Union of Islamic Courts, may have succeeded in gaining control in much of Somalia, but, having defeated the country's warlords, the papered-over cracks in the alliance are now becoming more noticeable.

The UIC is split between its Salafist and Qutubist tendencies, led by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys and moderate cleric Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, respectively.

Mr Aweys, on the US list of those allegedly linked to terrorism, is widely believed to be the genius behind the military campaign that led to the UIC's victory.

But in a society where the gun rules, it is difficult to see how he can become a powerful player. Real power lies with Mr Aweys.

And given the deep grudge he bears President Yusuf following al-Itihaad's bloody defeat, he may capitalise on his new-found power to make life difficult for the weak president and further his ambitions for a Greater Somalia.

Indeed. Under these circumstances, and even though it will be suicide, Aweys is going to be forced to deliver the coup de' grace on Yusuf, given their long time, highly personal animosity. To NOT do so will also be fatal. So Aweys time is limited, one way or another. If Aweys were to consider what was truly best for Somalia, and for the UIC, he'd cede power to Ahmed, but we all know he's going to do what HE believes best for Aweys. And thats to get rid of Yusuf, if not literally, than at least figuratively. But in NO WAY can I see Somali's subscribing to the brand of Islam that he proposes. They'll off him first, as MM suggests.

This Islamist movement lacks an organizational base. It pretty much resembles Taliban. I heard America is going to support the TFG advance into the Capital. The assistance will come from African peacekeeping troops .

The Next two months, You will hear a whole different story from Somalia.
