First of all I will admit ignorance and willing to be corrected and educated on this matter.
when I say Benadiri I do not mean the original owners and builders of the city or the inhabitants of the region only. I am not even sure what I mean. Is it Gibilcad, Reer Xamar, Cadcad, Shaanshi? Carab?
And how about Tunnis, Jiidows and others who `look' pure maintsream Somali(ie tall, skinny with bad attitude and serious halitosis) but who at least have an ingrained urbane culture? What about those Somalis with reer `xabash' labels who are more part of the cities of Mog and barawe and Merca more than any other socoto Somali?
But I am thinking cultural contributionof that complex group identifiable only by NOT being mainstream nomadic Somali . One is of course outstanding and unique to them: cities of the South. They built Mog and Barawe and Merca. I am not sure who built Kismayo. This means everything urban and modern about Somalia, at least southern Somalia is entirely theirs: architecture, textiles, writing, museums, boat-building, trade.
But how about other cultural activities? There is a whole Somali Music genre called Benadiri. Sadly most people know the cheesily bollywoodised version of it but they dont know about the only Somali Opera ever produced was a Benadiri work. And how about Umar shoolli and Ahmed Naji Sacad and the anonoymous playwrights who composed classics like the ancient "Baddaa doon baa mareysoo" (no kids it wasnt a sulfa original) and the modern "Aw geeddi Shaamboo"?
Please tell me more about this of you know. If you dont go and make tea for mum and learn and stay away.
