NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, who worked for top New York fashion agencies, has died of starvation at the age of 21.
The 5-foot-7, 88-pound model was working for Ford, Elite and L'Equipe when she was hospitalized with kidney failure in October in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the New York Post reported Thursday. The newspaper said despite treatment, Reston refused to believe she was anorexic.
Her kidney failed Oct. 25, the day before she was scheduled to go to Paris for a photo shoot.
In the months leading up to Reston's hospitalization, she was eating only apples and tomatoes, a friend was quoted as saying.
The Sao Paulo native, who was buried Wednesday, became a model at the age of 13.
L'Equipe agency owner Lica Kohlrausch said she became concered about Reston after she'd worked in Japan on a catalog for Georgio Armani.
"A representative of my agency called me and said Carolina was too skinny," Kohlrausch told the newspaper. "For me, it was very worrisome coming from a woman who is used to working with models."
