Questions About Islam In Somalia

Postby gedo_gurl » Tue Dec 19, 2006 8:14 pm

Im just curious to know about the effects of Islam BACK in the day.

When (roughly) did Islam come to Somalia?

Was Sufi'sm really the first and most prominent branch of our diin followed by our people?

Someone told me the Sufis used to sing and write poetry to attract people to the diin, that doesnt sound right, please show me anything to the contrary....

How did the people take to Islam? By this, I mean that Id heard of these people called the 'gaalo'. They are aparently a part of Oromo now or something, but they left Somalia due to Islam I heard. Is that true?

And if anyone knows about the origins of my favourite fashion combo - bhaati (diric shii(d) (t)...I dont know) garbosaar, lemme know.

I was just thinking about how religion and culture can be so harmonious and that although people learn to adopt new customs, people will just adapt their culture to fit in with their diin, like clothing, food ect, without their cultural identity changing particularly much.

Islam entered through the Great Trading center of Zeylac, which had a multinational population, sometime in the late 7th century.

from the 800's onwards Sufism would have been familiar to Somalis as all missionaries where sufis.

The qadiriya branch was the most common in somalia,
it was founded by cabdulqadir al jeylani from Iraq.

Islam reached in horn of africa before it reached madinah....I am sure you're aware of the fact that some of the saxaba were sent to ardul xabash earlier known to horn of africa by the prophet csw to escape the prosecution of the quraish......Some of the saxaba choosed to stay after the defeat of the quraish and had started spreading the deen of Allah to different people....Although there is debate over when somalis first started appearing in what's called today somalia non the less somalis are probably the first to take islam as religion...

We were either the mix product of those sxba or were the of the first people to accept islam as their religion.....In which ever case i am proud.. Very Happy
