somali cities/towns and electricity

Postby Lord Diplock » Fri Feb 09, 2007 2:59 pm

Could someone tell me where major somali cities and towns (like Bosaaso, Garowe, Hargeisa, Kismayo etc) get their electricity supply from? local generators or from Ethiopia?

This is important question. thanks in advance.

Lord Diplock,

Mogadishu gets its electricity from generators and there are many companies that provide electricity for a price. This was started by a company called Elman electronics back in the mid 90s and a main generator provides electricity for a neighborhood. There are different generators stationed throughout the city.

The company charges each house by how many light bulbs/rooms they want to light up and how many electric appliances they have.

Also, some families/hotels/restaurants/schools/universities have their own generators that they can turn on or off.

I visited Mogadishu in 1997 and was surprised to find that many districts had electricity and no running water. Marka also had electricity when I visited and still does.

I don't know about Bari or the other regions, I can only speak about southern Somalia.

Good luck!

Almost all of somalia use these power generators..mainly small ones that could provide electricity to one house/restaurant etc etc.
