Lol @ Maria! Finally you have woken up from the zzzzzzzzzzzz!
Gaaf is more interesting, been to a couple and always needed a translator.

Shaash saar has been highjacked and is totaly done differently nowadays than in the traditional way. Now one sees the new bride leaving her reception for a change of clothes and the shaash saar ceremony is done right there and then on the same night of the wedding reception, instead of having the event after 7 days (if s this a cost cutting measure, it is tacky!) Also, every Xaliimo wants to put a shaash on the bride, instead of a select group of house wives who have been happily married for a long time.
thanks niya for the explanation.

My family is 'Reer Gaalkacyood' who grew up in Muqdisho, and now live in the States, and ever since i can remember i always heard of "Shaashsaar", specially seeing my sisters, cousons, mom, and aunties getting ready to do their thing at the 'shaashsaar'

they once had this 'Shaashsaar' at my home in minneapolis ( we have a huge seating room area, about 40 people could sit compfortably walaahi)....and ofcourse it was upstairs, and i was sitting downstairs watching tv; anyways all the Halwa, food, beverages, were all upstairs, so i decided to go upthere and get me some, and that is when i saw the 'Bride' in the middle of the room, and a bunch of ladies all around her like a circle, singing(buraanbur) or something, and every now and then a lady would get up and put a 'shaash' over the bride, etc, etc....very colorful, weird, and exotic!
Both the bride and the groom were Leelkase, so the Shaashsaar is definatley not strict to one group of people,

this is practiced by alot of Somalis, regardless of Qabiil or region,
i think the fact that almost 2 million Somalis lived together in Muqdisho also helped popularize this event as well, making it 'a somali tradition'.

as for 'Xeedho', is it the occasion where the Grooms Best Men try to untie a bunch of "dhiilo" or "haamo" and if they don't untie it, they are made to drink a glass of concentrated Salt Water, Shocked Shocked

I come from a strict al-itahad family so this "Shaashsaar" and ''Xeedho'' is as foreign to me as mexican chupacapra, it's ground for beheading if I decide embrace this rituals. Laughing

Assalaamu Alaikum,

Zulaika, I'm sure you will find cultural events boring. Who among us in the west enjoy going to museums? It's natural you'd opt for the glitter of the ShaarShaar over the substance that come with the Gaaf.

Wassalaam Wabilaahi Towfiiq

Yes. They usually have about 3-5 elderly men who are consider the judges, and there is a girl who is holding a stick who is going to go around where the guys are sitting and she will pick one, he has to then go to the bride/groom shake their hands and try to undress the frigging thing (I so hate the idea behind this) if the guy makes a wrong move the girl is keep hitting him with the stick, after few mistakes he goes to the judges where they ask him all kind of questions and if he can't answer them, they will tell him to do something.. Like sing a song, make a certain noise or something. Its pretty fun, try going to one...

LOOL@ horny song.. only you Axlaan would think of ciyaal suuqnimo like that.. Welcome back naa!!!

They don't do shaashsaar in the west like they used to in xamar. Sad wallaahi some women are mean, they even take back their shaash after the ceremony how reer baadiyo can they get!

I was planing on having mine done in xamar with perfect buraanbur and very traditionally but some warlords called TFG ruined it all for me... nacalaakutaal....

I'll be damned if I have the shaashsaar on the same day as the wedding as I've seen around here.

LOL@Horny Song...walle tanu waa khasiisad caadi ah.
Axlaan dhako wlc back.

Zulaika, I'm having both Inshallah.
I knew I'd be having a xeedho, but my mom's cousins my aunts are like...Maya,maya,maya gabadha she has to have shaashaar too ..(my mom didn't care either, she didn't even have one)...islaamaha Mijerteen waa dhibaato socota LOL.. You know what I never thought of this but I bet 95% of his family doesn't know what the hell a shaashsaar is. Man, I can't wait to see the look's on their faces when they see it, it's going to be hillarious come to think of it..Lololol

I'm just worried about them messing up my hair. The other thing I'm not looking forward to is xino. I'm not really into it. One of my aunts told me to put on xino for the reception as well....I just laughed at her....LOL...who the hell would wear a white dress and xino?

Axlaan, when you get married your dress can't be white, you'll have to wear like a brown almost black..ileen waanu is naqaanaaye... Wink
And before you even say anything mine isn't white, it will be ivory. LOL

Gogarad, I was watching my inabti's xeedho back in Hargeysa the other day and they had about 35 xeedho's.... Shocked Apprently waa la iskugu faana.

Europe ileen waa badawiyiin lakiin now people here are doing it.
Is it me or is that tacky?

Horta is xeedho a man thing? Because I was not allowed to watch it and could only peak through the window and hear the commotion.... Confused

No babes it's for both female's and males, but only men participate in the the actual game part. The girl's father doesn't attend, neither does her mother. It's like the unveiling of the girl. I'll leave you to use your imagination as to what that means. Laughing Very Happy
Xeedho= The girl meaning the "xeedho", being undressed by the men from the grooms side.
Shaashsaar= A dance off and qabiil praising between fat old women from both side.

I personally think they are both fun for the first hour.
u gonna have both? ala adiga dhib jecelidaa. good luck with dee. oh and shaashsaar, u'd definitely need xini. but for the wedding maybe u shouldn't. its just a clash of cultures when u wear a vera wang and your hands have more detaits than the dress. Laughing so I personally wouldn't opt for such. i really love xini or qadaad a lot but since i'll be rockin' my Monique Lhuillier dress, i ain't messin' with it. Very Happy

Hanna, I heard that’s the deal now in Somalia... apparently the more xeedhos u get the more valuable you are which I find ludicrous...

I know what u means about changing more than once, I personally find it very tacky and show off-nimo and badow-nimo... What’s wrong with getting one outfit u like and stick to it the whole night? Confused

Didn't see it here yet though..

Eyes.. I was going to say exactly what Hanna did, but she saved me the typing part... Thanks Hanna... LOL

It's not my choice walaahi to be honest too much party's. I think two should be enough but I guess since Im the oldest of all my mom's sibblings and first to get married it's a big deal to them.
I would have liked just a small meher, the reception, and a small xeedho.

Naayaahe, have you been told yet to lacag dirso to back home..duruuc luguugu soo iibiyo. I said duruuc aan maxay ku sameeyo yacni? Kulaha, dee qaar aad sii qaadatid. Lool...What on earth? I'm not going to be around the house in a dirac alot, I'll be working half the time and besides dirac guri lugu joogo moyaane who needs a bunch of brand new dirac's to prance around the house in? I'll just take kuwayga jeexjeexan with the bleach stains..LOL And if i need to go somewhere i'll just buy one you know..Lol Oh and uunsi too...Hooyoyinku waa cute walle. God bless then.

Monique Lhullier eh? Nice. Mine is a Maggie Sottero...I am inlove with it. But I still don't have anything to wear for any of the other parties, I need about 4 more outfits. ..And my gaalo friends want to have a bridal shower so, I have to find something to wear for that too..shouldn't be too hard to find. But damn, they need to bring out more spring stuff already!

When is your big day?

Gogarad, Lol I was like ma of all the things la isugu faano..but then I understand because alot of work goes into making just one xeedho so. But they don't just put hilib and muqmad anymore. They put xalwad in some, sweets in others, duruuc and uunsi in some, dahab too. So I guess the more xeedho's you have = the more friends you have and the more people like you and your parents..Lol
