The airport in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, has been attacked as the first African Union (AU) peacekeepers arrived in the country.

A BBC correspondent says eight mortars were fired during a ceremony to welcome the 400 Ugandan troops.

One person was wounded in the attack and three other civilians have died in heavy clashes elsewhere in the city.

Dozens have been killed by insurgents since the Ethiopian-backed government forces defeated Islamists last year.

The AU force is taking over from Ethiopian troops who intervened to help Somalia's transitional government oust the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC).

Somalia enjoyed a six-month lull in the insecurity that has dogged the country for the past 16 years when the UIC was in power last year.

But violence has escalated in the past two months.

The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says a Somali man was wounded by shrapnel during the airport attack, but most of the mortars missed their targets.

Insurgents attacked the old defence ministry compound, using rocket-propelled grenades, and three civilians were killed in the crossfire.

In a separate incident, a local militia clashed with insurgents who were attempting to fire mortars at the presidential palace.

The AU contingent is the first of a 1,700-strong force promised by Uganda's government.

So far, the AU has managed to raise only about half of the 8,000 troops required. Burundi, Nigeria and Ghana are also expected to contribute.

The head of the AU delegation, Geoffrey Mugunya, said on Monday that the mission would not interfere in Somalia's internal affairs, but would support the transitional government's own efforts to train enough security forces.

The BBC's Karen Allen in Uganda says the fear is that, just as happened in Sudan's Darfur region, the force could be under-strength and under-resourced.

Any targeting of Ugandan troops by insurgents in Somalia could give other troop-contributing nations cold feet, derailing the mission, our correspondent adds.

If the South has any shot at security, it lies with the AU and others training Federal Somali Forces. Plus international aid.

To have a peacekeeping force, you need to have PEACE & agreement among the various players in the conflict to have the force there.

In Somalia, there is no peace or consensus among the factions.

I also never support foreign troops because all it does is upset the political balance and assists one player.

I understand where you are coming from, but, given the present circumstances, that attitude is going to be counter-productive.

I firmly believe that only Somalis can come to an agreement amongst themselves. Having forces when there is no peace amongst the parties only adds fuel to the fire.

The AU force will be used by the TFG to help quell unrest. The incentive for the TFG to negotiate or to accept a brokered deal is diminished.

My ideal sitaution would have been to have a peacedeal signed first and a token force to observe decommissioning and dismarmament.

Peacekeeping failed in 1993 and will fail again due the same faults: being biased to certain Somali groups, being unwelcomed by key players and joining the conflict on the side of one faction.

This man is not alone, the majority of Norteastern people act this way.

They are truely like them dhocilo called Cheerleaders. They are on the sidelines cheerleading for the Tigre team against the Somali team.

It's a disgrace to call them Somali, they do not deserve the name considering their Tigre cheerleading behaviour.

These africans need to do go back to their countries because all this is going to cause is more faction clashes and more death. These stupid ppl in the gov't need to realize that somali clan need to talk to each other to come to an agreement so that a gov't can function. You can't just bring AU troops were there is no agreements between parties for peace. We need to rescue ourselves from this so called gov't before it sinks our ppl to a point of no return.
