Leave Somalia or face all-out war, Ethiopia told
18 Apr 18, 2007 - 4:21:26 PM

Ethiopia must withdraw its troops from Somalia immediately or face an all-out war that "no army" could resist, three senior Somali leaders warned on Wednesday.

The three, including top Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hussein Aidid, who holds a post in Somalia's government, were meeting in the Eritrean capital for talks.

Aidid said Somalis will unite against the "brutal occupation" of Ethiopian forces, who earlier this year helped the government's armed forces wrest control of much of Somalia from an Islamist movement.

"Up until now we [have used] dialogue to remove them but if they refuse to cooperate ... we will set everything aside to remove the Ethiopians ourselves," Aidid told reporters.

Sporadic fighting has continued between Ethiopian troops and insurgents in Mogadishu since government troops returned to the capital.

The three leaders, who shared a stage under a Somali map emblazoned with a dove and the logo "Somalia for Somalis", warned that the situation in the war-torn nation would deteriorate if Ethiopia failed to withdraw.

"Less than 10% of our forces are on the ground against the Ethiopians. No army, I can tell you that, can stop what is coming up," Aidid said.

Aidid, who holds the post of deputy prime minister and housing minister and is a member of the Hawiye clan that holds sway in the capital, Mogadishu, said the three leaders only wanted to work for peace in Somalia.

"The aim is to create dialogue among our people after 16 years of civil war to act as a platform for reconciliation," he said.

Despite his government posts, Aidid has openly opposed the presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia.

The third leader, Sheikh Sharif Hassan Aden, was ousted from his post as Parliament speaker in January. He was accused of being too close to the Islamists.

Eritrea, which has been accused of backing the Islamists, has called for Ethiopia to withdraw its troops. Asmara rejects the accusations.

Analysts have expressed fears that Ethiopia and Eritrea, still at odds over their unresolved 1998 to 2000 border conflict, may fight a proxy war in Somalia.

Somalia has lacked an effective central government since the ousting of former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 touched off a bloody power struggle that exploded into inter-clan warfare.

More than 14 attempts to restore a functional government in Somalia have since failed.

"Less than 10% of our forces are on the ground against the Ethiopians. No army, I can tell you that, can stop what is coming up,"

This is the typical language of the Somali, which is always dripping with hyperbole.

I believe he was sending a warning to all Somalis when he exposed the secret...he obviously woke up after he realised he was in bed with the same people who were behind the murder of his father.

he will need to do more to be considered a real Ceydiid but this is a start.

and it is true, no army can stop what is coming. Somalis know what it means to fight and they have no fear of death. I just hope there is another way out of this for the sake of our people.

Major cause of defeat:
Taking pride in one's self, power, greatness in numbers, or material strength.

I haven't seen a bigger flipflopper than Caydiid junior, same man who little time ago wanted to annex Somalia to Ethiopia. Well, everybody have time until soul reaches their throats or sun rises from the west, so I hope he's sincere and he really changed.

"Major cause of defeat:
Taking pride in one's self, power, greatness in numbers, or material strength."

Rhetorics like this are very acceptable in the war and words must be very tough. War is the only place to boast and act boldly so to scare the enemy and also asahaba did this. There are dozens of examples of this, like when Abu Dujaanah had his "turban of death" on and he walked boastfully and Prophet (scws) said that Allah hates this kind of acting, except in war, or in the battle of Ajnadain when Dhiraar shouted to the romans: "I am the death of the Pale Ones,
I am the killer of the Romans, I am a scourge sent upon you, I am Dhiraar bin Al Azwar" etc etc.

Of course if fighters really trust in the numbers and equipment instead of Allah then it's a cause of defeat. But talk like this is needed in the battle.

Salahuddiin, that "rhetoric" is simply prohibited, no ifs or buts. Where did the Prophet (SCW) say that one can walk around in boast? What is the source of the narration?

Secondly, taking pride in one's self, power, greatness in numbers, or material strength was one of the major reason that lead to the ICU's demolishment. Thirdly, in war, Muslims must not go in to battle with the mindset that they are superior than the enemy. Lastly, do not confuse such rhetorics with uplifting the morale of the believers. Uplifting the morale of the Muslims is done by reminding them of the Akhiraat.

Warsame

This incident when Abu Dujaanah was given the sword of a Prophet (saws) and he put on his red bandana of death and walked boastfully with Prophet (saws) approving this in situation of war, is found from seera of Ibn Hishaam and from al Raxiiq al Makhtuum. Also I have this feeling there's a hadeeth in Muslim or Bukhari about this that I have read, but I'm not sure about that though, I could remember wrong.

Also there are many famous letters sent during the caliphate of Cumar ibn al Khattab to kings of enemies, where they were threatened with an army where every man loves death more than they (enemies) love life and won't stop until their enemy is totally destroyed, if they don't pay jizyah or convert to Islam. These letters were sent for example by Khalid ibn al Walid and Abu Cubayda.

Intimidating enemy and trying to strike fear to their hearts is different than actually believing that victory comes because of army's numbers and power.
