what else did you expect? did you think you would just give them hilib iyo caano and send them back to Tigre land?

war wadanka dhan bey qabsadeen, and they are going to keep their puppet TFG in power. Forget the military base, they are going to get the ports and charge Somalis taxes

Maybe we should all start learning Amharic...?

Ethiopian forces tighten noose around Mogadishu .

Ethiopia forces on Friday tightened the noose around the calm Somali capital, Mogadishu, a day after taking control of insurgent strongholds after some of the heaviest fighting in the city's history, residents said.

With neither shelling nor gunfire for the first time in nine days, the forces patrolled northern and southern Mogadishu as residents solemnly collected rotting bodies that were abandoned in the streets.

Troops on foot and aboard trucks patrolled mortar-blasted neighbourhoods, where they moved from house to house to crack down on suspected insurgents who melted away into civilian area, an Agence France-Presse (AFP) correspondent reported.

"They are moving from house to house arresting people," said Ibrahim Sheikh Mao, a resident of northern Mogadishu's Suuqahoola area that was a theatre of the clashes.

"I imagine they have arrested hundreds of people because they started the operation early in the morning," he added.

"All men are fleeing from the houses because the Ethiopian forces are arresting them," said Shamso Nur, a woman who lives in the al-Kamin area.

"I have seen three men near my house being taken by Ethiopian forces. I do not know if they were fighters, but they looked like civilians," she added.

An AFP reporter saw at least 20 men having been bundled into a military truck.

In northern Mogadishu, residents ventured into the streets and inside the labyrinthine back street of former rebel fortifications, collecting bodies and preparing them for burial, AFP witnessed.

"We have collected seven bodies, including one of a woman around those areas," said Haji Mukhta Hassan, an elder.

"They were rotten and we have taken them to a mosque to prepare them for burial," he added.

Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi on Thursday declared a military triumph over the insurgents, after ferocious clashes killed at nearly 400 people and displaced up to 400 000 others.

Previous battles three weeks ago in the city claimed at least 1 000 lives, mainly civilians. -- AFP

War iska eeg niyoow, maanta wax lagu qoslaa iska yar>
Mogadiscio in Flames
Mogadishu - Shells and machinegun fire pounded the Somali capital on Thursday, setting buildings on fire, as Ethiopians forces and Islamist guerrillas battled for the ninth day.

After a night of sporadic shelling, columns of Ethiopian tanks ploughed into northern Mogadishu, firing mortars and rockets onto suspected rebel positions, as machinegun fire ricocheted across neighbourhoods.

Terrified civilians scrambled to escape stray bullets as buildings were set on fire and Mogadishu was transformed into a virtual "ghost town", said residents.

"The heaviest fighting is raging this morning. They are exchanging everything they have, from bullets to anti-aircraft shells, no-one can put his head up," said Salah Doli, a resident of Jamhuriha area.

"Mortars have hit shops and buildings destroying them and setting others ablaze," he added.

Resident Ahmed Suad said shelling had destroyed buildings in the Tawfiq area, forcing civilians to flee as insurgents dug in to resist a bid by Ethiopian forces to wipe them out.

Corpses 'rotting in the battlefield'

He said: "As I was fleeing my home, I saw several bodies lying in the streets.

"This is some of the heaviest fighting ever in northern Mogadishu."

Human rights workers monitoring the death toll said on Wednesday at least 329 people, mostly civilians and insurgents, had been killed in the clashes that come around three weeks after similar battles claimed at least 1 000 lives.

Dozens of corpses lay rotting in the battle fields as the ongoing fighting prevented aid workers from collecting them.

Mogadishu doctors have appealed for medical supplies for the wounded in some of the heaviest clashes in Mogadishu since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Facing water shortages

The United Nations says that more than 321 000 people had fled the seaside capital, home to about a million people, since February 1, but elders said the figure had shot beyond 400 000.

Many of the displaced are camped in the capital's outskirts, facing disease outbreaks and without sufficient water, food and medicine, according to aid workers.

Alarmed by a looming humanitarian disaster, the UN has pleaded for access to bring aid to the displaced.
