Somali president says Islamists defeated

Postby COSTA » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:35 pm

Mogadishu, Somalia (AFP) - Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed said Islamist forces in Mogadishu had been defeated and appealed to residents fleeing the recent flare-up in violence to return home.

"The government forces with the support of the Ethiopian troops have completed the operations against the terrorist groups in Mogadishu and they have accomplished their mission," Yusuf told a press conference at the presidential palace.

"We call on the people who fled their houses to get back and maintain their normal life."

Ethiopian forces have been battling Islamist fighters and clan militia since the beginning of the year, when they backed Somali government soldiers to oust an Islamist movement from the capital and other areas in the Horn of Africa nation.

But remnant Islamists put up stiff resistance, prompting an upsurge in violence which killed hundreds of civilians and prompted an estimated 400,000 people - according to the United Nations - to flee.

The fighting was some of the heaviest since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre exploded into a bloody power struggle in a country that has defied repeated attempts to restore stability.

Hundreds of displaced residents trooped back to Mogadishu on Saturday to inspect their houses, many of which were destroyed by heavy shelling in nine days of fighting that died down on Thursday when the joint Ethiopia-Somali forces seized insurgents strongholds in northern Mogadishu.

"I visited my house this morning and saw Ethiopian soldiers inside. Some of them were sleeping and others sitting on my veranda," said Muhubo Ali Diriye, a resident of Mogadishu's northern Towfiq district.

"They allowed me to get in the rooms and check how things are," she told AFP.

An elder in Towfiq, Sheikh Hassan Dubad said the fighting had been the worst he had ever seen.

"The worst shelling took place in our neighbourhood and we don't know who we can ask to give us compensation," said Sheikh Hassan, whose house was destroyed by fire.

"I saw my house for the first time in nine days, but I could not tell whether it was my house because it was demolished by artillery shells," said Yusuf Gure Yare, another resident.

Government forces patrolled the streets and searched residents who were returning, an AFP correspondent and residents said.

"The Ethiopian forces are checking anybody walking on the street, but we can reach our houses today for the first time and no one is stopping us," said Wiliyo Ali Ga'al, a mother of two.

Cut your propaganda, most houses were destroyed during the civil war in 91, i re-call how siyaad berre shelled 1/2 of the city, there was a only a few houses standing, most of the houses are the once that people build, those that are occupied mainly belong to the weak, minority hawiye clan's.

those that remained is called the "spoils of war"

Jareers are the most funniest of all, every city they sleep a fort-night they claim is there's Laughing

Somalia president claims victory, asks for international help
Sat. April 28, 2007 12:11 pm.- By Mohamed Abdi Farah. - Send this news article

(SomaliNet) Somalia’s interim president Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed has today revealed that the war in Mogadishu ended urging displaced people to return to their homes in the Somalia capital.

In a news conference held in the presidential palace in Mogadishu, Mr. Yusuf said the war between the government and the remnants of the Islamists has been accomplished.

“The fighting in the capital was between the government troops along with its allied forces of Ethiopians and remnants of the ousted Islamic Courts,” said Yusuf.

President Yusuf said the transitional government was forced to involve in war after the insurgents attacked government positions and the other compounds stationed by the Ethiopian forces and the AU peacekeepers.

“We have many times offered to rebel groups to enter talks with us and end the gap through peace dialogue but they refused that and took the option of fighting,” added Yusuf.

He described the recent fighting in Somalia capital regrettable and voiced concern over the civilians who fled the capital and suffering in suburb areas.

Also in his press conference, president Yusuf appealed for the Mogadishu’s people to return to their homes since the fighting has ended.

Mr. Yusuf who yesterday returned to the capital after eight days of heavy and bloody battles, asked for the international community to provide an urgent assistance to the displaced people from Mogadishu.

His comments came as the government’s security forces began patrolling on the streets of the capital searching all cars for weapons and suspects.
