How does reading this make you feel?

Postby Firefly » Tue May 04, 2010 10:19 am

"It is just one tactic in a global war to keep Muslim women at heel. In Saudi Arabia, women are kept under house arrest and banned from driving or showing their faces in public. In Afghanistan, the Taliban massacre teachers who dare to educate girls. In Iran, women are stoned to death for adultery. In Somalia, women's vaginas are butchered, with the clitoris cut out and the remains crudely stitched up. These are not freak exceptions: they are often state policy."

what kind of question is that?
Its pretty self explanatory that its disgusting and goes against every Islam teaches. The men and women in those socieites are fok'n dumb. The men for thinking that they can inslave other human beings and the women for not standing up for themselves collectively.

^^ The same civilised countries that colonised your home country, caused centuries of displacement for others on the continent and now fund the warlords that have caused you exile, forcing you to make them rich from your hard worked taxes (well, some of you anyway) whilst your country, the one that needs you to work the most is suffering daily from the carnage they bankroll. The same country which steals your resources whilst the warlords fight the visible war for much less profit. The same one that encourages and charges women thousands to cut their labia minora and deform their breasts whilst having the mantra 'flesh is freedom for women'... Yeah, civilised indeed.

Firefly, walaal it makes me sick to my stomach. Women are the most over worked, despised and undervalued creatures on planet earth. But this is not new, nor shocking any more. I suppose it would also be good to see if women even value womanhood any more.

It makes me think that all that is being done to Muslim women by Muslims themselves and by their own countrymen and women. What the Saudis are doing is no different in actuality to those who mutilated their women during the slave trade, the Taliban probably think they're stopping their women from turning into prostitues because that's how they see western women and FGM is done by mothers and grandmothers. Oh yeah and stoning is shari'a

That paragraph makes me feel as though it's been designed to make women feel like victims. Make us feel as though there is a great battle against us with many fronts.

Thank you all for your comments. There's no right or wrong answer - because we all react differently to things.

Would you feel different about this quote if you knew its source? Would your initial reaction change? Say, if you knew it was part of an article posted in the Independent, or The Sun? Or Muslim weekly newspaper? Would it make a difference?

Firefly, :rose:

As soon as they point out 'Muslim' and only pick out 'Muslim-countries' I don't see anything beyond that. But since you post this, I will give it my honest answer.

I will not deny there are troubles within those muslim countries that affects muslim women in those countries, but there is no tactical war to keep muslim women at heel on a whole. I'm not buying that.

women's vaginas are butchered, with the clitoris cut out and the remains crudely stitched up.
When Animist communities in West Africa do this, is it in line with this global war against Muslim women?
There is no war against women in the 'Muslim world' (whatever that is), there is a war against women, and its been raging for a while now

This sounds like the Daily Mail, written by someone who genuinely believes sexism and all forms of misogyny in the West ended sometime in the 70s, and its only the poor oppressed women in the 'Muslim world' who need to be liberated today

I feel offended :|

WSM:-Thank you for your honesty and great answer dear.. :rose:

(I've got some GREAT news for you) ;)

Mad-May:- Great perspective. Exactly what I was thinkin'..

Helwaa:- Good reminder.

Mainly, I wanted people to focus on the use of "Muslim" women.. they've branded all "Muslim women" as weak and defenseless..and just pathetic. You get the whole East vs West narrative. The quote only mentions.."Muslim women" specifically..as if only they face gross injustices. Women all over the world suffer injustices daily..so why should the injustices of Muslim women be highlighted or criticized more? Obviously, there is an agenda.

Muslim women= oppressed, defenseless, weak

Muslim men = aggressive, oppressors, dominant

The quote was taken from an article written in the Independent newspaper. It was titled: " Dare we stand up for Muslim women?" Even the title is condescending.

Here is the link:- http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/co ... 69631.html

Here is a great rebuttal for that same article:- http://muslimahmediawatch.org/2008/10/s ... en-johann/

If anyone has the time to read it. It's pretty interesting stuff, kinda old, but still interesting.

I was just researching some information on Muslim women and came across it. Just type "Muslim women" or "Muslims" in any toolbar..and it's amazing how much crap you get...out of more than 1000 hits..only a few will be positive. :|
