Hey BV & Firefly, tell me if this is sexist

Postby udun » Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:16 am

"Dumar iyo hadalba iyagoo aan loo ducayn bay tarmaan"

We were in a meeting yesterday and one of the old guys stated that proverb and I look around and actually saw few people shaking their heads. Sisters, enlighten me and tell me if that is sexist  If it is, I will do may part to never state it and also try my friends and my family member to never ever use it.

Plz also ensure you don't fire massive rockets at me. This is for all to see and know it and learn how our woman feel when we, Somali males, state that maahmaah.

One thing I know for sure is it is wrong islamically to state it. I also think it is wrong culturally but wanna get your feedback and that of other Halimos. It is also for the rest Somalis who visit here to see especially the males if they ever visit this section to never use it again.

I will look for more "sexist" maahmaah and list in this section and get your feedback.

What does tarman mean?

And if you think it's wrong according to Islam then I think you already have your answer.

BV,

Not asoo la rabin (not wanted). It is women and talk get too many/much when no one prays for them. Normally, Somalis bring this maahmaah (proverb) when discussion gets far loo long that they are loosing the objective of the dicussion/talk.

It is not gender correct but I was testing if you are aware of it. It is obvious to me your Somali grammar is not very strong, so you can let it pass. :D

This is the first time I've come across it, Udun. But if it's wrong Islamically..then it's wrong PERIOD! Dumarka wee hadal badanyihiin lakiin..taas been ma'ahan but there are other sexist Somali Maahmaahs..for example: " Naag ama guri ha ku jirto ama god"...although there's no better place for a woman than the comfort of her own house but to say she's better off dead? It sounds harsh. :|

"Naag ama guri ha ku jirto ama god"
Imagine having a father or a husband who thinks like that. I don't know how our grandmothers and great grandmothers did it, Ilahey ha unaxariisto :rose:
