Human papillomavirus and Cervical Cancer.

Postby Warsan_Star_Muslimah » Sat Feb 05, 2011 6:13 pm

Salaam ladies,

Let me just educated you on something I was educated in recently! The Human papillomavirus is the MAJOR cause of Cervical Cancer, and in the UK alone about 2,800 are diagnosed with Cervial Cancer.

Human papillomavirus affects:

The lining of the mouth and throat
The Cervix
The Anus

Now, in the UK they were offering all the girls under 18 to be vaccinated against HPV, and they are hoping through half of the population being vaccinated, then the guys won't catch it too. YES, men can catch it too, mainly through oral and anus sex. (They catch it from their partners in oral and through the other way male-to-male are risky)

. Of the different types of HPV, types 16 and 18 cause about 7 out of 10 (70%) cancers of the cervix.

. Research has shown that Gardasil can prevent the development of anal warts which are caused by HPV types 6 and 11. At the moment we don’t know whether the vaccine will prevent HPV infection in the mouth. (I'm hoping since we are muslims, no funny business at the back, and well forget about going low or anything of that nature, it can be dangerous!)

THE vaccine works best on girls who have not been sexually active, as you get the virus through sex! But those who are active are still recommended as it still helps! So, has anyone on this forum taken this vaccine, would you consider taking it after having read this information? For 18's it is not FREE and you'll have to pay around £300-500.

p.s. They gave it to my little sister, and apparently she refused to take the last injection (comes in 3 steps) cause it lasts only for four years!!!!!! :o And she is far toooooo young to be thinking any naughty business.

KD,

Did you know the virus runs out in 4 years time? My sister said the nurse told her this but I don't know whether to believe her or not.

I too am thinking about getting the vaccine, but it'll cost me money which I don't have at the moment.

Anywho, there is also the smear test that you get done at the GP for free, but I don't know if those who aren't active need to get it done.

Anywho, this something all females should be aware of like being aware of Breast Cancer.

I wasn't told that ! :| I think it's lies ... Check on the Internet ?

I feel for u ... Having to pay

I'm too young for a smear test but since I have nothing better to do , I'll google what it consists of.

Did you watch that documentary? Why did they focused so much on the oral aspect if you can contract HPV and therefore get cervical cancer from normal sex. Surely that is a greater concern?

Would I have the vaccine? Right now it doesn't make sense especially if it lasts only 4 years, I'd do some serious research before reaching a decision though. Another thing to think about when you're getting married.

ps

You can't have a smear test if you're still a virgin. Unless of course you are asking the GP/nurse to change your status but I doubt they'd be willing.

She'd ask and you'd tell her.

Do you genuinely not know the physical definition of a virgin?

I think what she meant was that the vaccine is most effective if administered before the female becomes sexually active, at least that's how I understood it.
