Fair enough but numbers aren't everything bro. You need quality, not quantity. Burma, Egypt and Vietnam all have around 400,000 to 500,000 soldiers but you can bet your ass Canada or Australia, who have only have around 1/8 the number of soldiers, can invade and take over these countries without hesitation. Us Somalis can't simply just add a thousands of more soldiers into our armies and hope that it would be sufficient enough to tackle Ethiopia or Kenya or have an army of good standard. You can have an army/air force of just 5,000 and I guarantee you that you can invade and take over Ethiopia with that number. But it all depends on quality.

American intervention is a price that Somalis should be willing to take. And in regards to the Chinese being corrupt and stingy, you'd be surprised of their sometimes giving nature. Since 2010, China invested/gave aid of more than $100 billion in Africa, the biggest recipients being Nigeria and Ghana. Our neighbors, Djibouti and Ethiopia, got billions for railroad, water and manufacturing projects. The Chinese, while allying with the Americans, are more than willing to make your military rival like those of Egypt or Nigeria, and if you scratch their back just right, possibly even SA.

An army of 5000 wouldn't be able to do anything. The shear size of a country like Ethiopia would prove logistical problems alone before any bullets went flying. A standing army of 50,000 is ideal, not so large as to prove unwieldy and not so tiny as to prove ineffectual.

The Americans only help when it benefits them, same with other countries. But they also have a habit of interfering and meddling in a countries politics and economic structure. the Chinese are corrupt, signing underhanded deals, destroying environments, hiring and training their own workers etc. If the Chinese build you a road, it will be quick and efficient but massive pollution will take place and not a single somali will be trained or hired to do the job.

BTW, I am actually currently reading a book on the Korean economic miracle. A lot of it had to do with the fact that a lot of Japanese companies trained and outsourced work to the Koreans as well as the brilliant and insightful reforms brought in by the dictator Park Chung Hee. By the time he was assassinated, Korea was on the way to becoming an industrial powerhouse.

I guess we can agree to disagree on how important the size of Somali armies should be but I'll join you in expressing my admiration for Mr.Park. Remarkable man. We should look very closely to South Korea. You can see how remarkable his reforms were when South Korea has become one the most richest countries on earth whereas their northern brothers are among the poorest (although to be fair, it has more to do with NK's failed economic policies for the large gap between the two nations)

GDP per capita of Somalia (1961): $66
GDP per capita of Korea, South (1961): $92

GDP per capita of Somalia (2012): $600
GDP per capita of Korea, South (2012): $23,000

Lets start by first introducing a military doctrine, training manuel for all units in the military. We also really need to lower the age of the service members. No one over the age of 40 should serve in combat situation accept the officers and trainers etc..

also we must quickly switched our BDU to something more suitable for our environment eg: dessert BDU or the something like the multi cam. Also the chinese fabric markets have hundreds of yards of of camouflage fabrics we can buy and have locals tailor for our troops.

these are things we can now do without even money. It's start.

what do you think of these ideas general abdi Ismail.
Good ideas, Lakiin I was thinking more about organisational changes. The army needs to be increased in man power. It needs proper disciplined regiments and divisions- particularly a heavy artillery division. It also needs to scrap all of its old, useless and outdated equipment like the tanks from the 1950s that are expensive to maintain. Believe it or not, the technical is vastly superior tactically. We need improvised armoured and mechanized units that suit our terrain, meaning lighter and faster modes of transport. We need to also develop a fleet of medium-sized cargo planes for logistics and surveillance. There are many other things I can't think of at the moment, in other words SL's "army" needs a massive and drastic overhaul.

Thtas what ive been saying all these years , dont knock the technical its one of the best pieces of military hardware out there.
you should improve on it, like standardization , i.e using only 1 model of toyota pickup for example , meaning spares and maintenance cheaper.
You also need a fleet of trucks for carrying fuel, ammo, water/food etc etc.
and small transport aircraft, this is the clincher, everyone ignores this small detail, its the Rawandans secret weapon in the congo wars.
The tutsis were having fun raping the congolese army and their hutu allies who were both useless in combat, but the success of the tutsis made Angola, Zambia, and many others gang up on them, they were facing troops equal to them in skill that had more manpower, and better equipment.
The tutsis still managed to kick ass all over congo, how by having a fleet of small cargo planes , just like the qat dealers use in somalia.
