Somaliland leader says will step down if loses polls

HARGEISA (Somalilandpress) — The president of Somalia’s self-declared Somaliland state said Thursday he would step down if he was defeated in presidential polls held at the weekend.

Dahir Riyale Kahin had faced strong challenges from two opposition candidates in Saturday’s elections in the northern breakaway region striving for international recognition.

“If I lose the election I will hand over responsibility in a very… democratic way,” Kahin told reporters.

The elections were conducted peacefully without violence or instances of suspected fraud.

Somaliland seceded from the rest of Somalia in 1991 four months after the overthrow of president Mohamed Siad Barre.

What a great day, July 1st 2010. The day the people of Somaliland by popular demand choose Madaxweyne Axmed maxamd Maxamud Silaanyo as their next President. The day this great man triumphed over his greatest political enemy UDUB who have left no stone unturned to discredit the man. From linking him to Al-shabaab to arresting party members to rading Kulmiye offices to not allowing Hotels to hold Kulmiye conferences to claimin he wasn't allowed to 'return' to Somaliland to bribing mp's to vote for their extension.

I think the commission did it for a reason. Why did they wait until July 1st to announce the results? Why not yesterday?

Why did they pick 26 June to hold the election? Those could be history changing events. ILAHAY ha ino barakeeyo.

My sincere condolences to my fallow Somalis in the north. You have now elected a war criminal who himself admitted that he was responsible for the killing and displacing a great number of Somalis in 1988. now that he is your leader I am afraid, the stability that you have enjoyed for the last 20 years has come to and end.
