How Does One Prepare For A Trip To The Motherland?

Postby Somalian_Boqor » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:46 pm

Now that I got the ticket in my hands I am excited and a bit Nervous.

Any tips will be appreciated

Thought I post here since Somalilanders are perhaps the best expertise to ask.

Do booty dance in your "Hood" to ear more cash so you could provide your relatives.

Make sure you grow some facial hair before you go home. They don't like friuties in Africa.

Welcome Boqor Darood

Several factors need to be taken into consideration first:

1) Is it your first visit
2) How many relatives are you going with
3) How long do you plan to say in Somalia
4) Where you will be staying (towns, villages, baadiyo etc)

Those are the main factors to pond over which in turn will contrinute 40% to your peperation.

Is it your first visit?
If it is your first visit, be prepared to take lots of money with you that will get you through the holiday. Although the money over there isn't worth much ( you will probably feel rich), family members will automatically assume that you will give out loads of money to those in towns and baadiyo. They have this perception of you living in the West equating to having money 24/7.

How many relatives are you going with?
The number of relatives accompanying you on the trip could be very comforting, especially if it's your first time. If you have family members your age (male) then this will be a benefit as they are the only once you will get along with and can talk to freely during your first moments (days, weeks etc) in the country.

How long do you plan to say in Somalia?
The longer you will stay, the more you will adapt to its society. It will be quite tough fitting in during the initial stages. People will spot that you're a Westerner from miles away and will test your manhood. If you do not have relatives back home that are respected in the local area i'd advice you not to go to far from home, especially at night time.

The best moments that you will cherish for the rest of the summer is the attenion from females that you will recieve. You don't even have to be good looking walahi, they all want yo. You will perhaps notice that the pretiest girls live back home and at times you will ask yur self "Kuwii foolxumaa maxaa Europe iyo America geeyey". I do not know what the 'dating scene' i like in your neck of he woods of Somalia, do watch out for girls when they ask you to meet them somewhere. Always take a couple of guys with you, preferably cousins, nephews, young uncles etc. Four out o ten times they ask you to meet them somewhere they have different motives (set up) and never take your pssport with you.

When police stop you in the middle of the road when you're drivig, step on the gas and do not stop. If you do you will most likely be asked to drop them home

Finally, don't forget to take your injections at your local doctor before going.
You will have the experience of a lifetime.

Before i forget:

Leave some cash at home ( upto a 1000 dollars or so). This could be used in case of an emergency ( e.g unexpected marriage) and those in the States can send you some money when you run out when you're still there.

Dam Cali_Gaab that is some good stuff. It is my first trip back home and I am going along, but having family members from Europe that I am meeting up with. I will be staying there for two months, mostly in Galkayo, but a visit to Bosaso iyo Garowe is a must. I will also be visiting a town called Burtnle that is 30mins from Galkayo. I am not worried about disrespect, I hail from the Lions of Mudug, my laf got the place on lockdown.

ps: I will fool around but I do not plan to get married there, my girlfriend in the states will just go crazy and that will not be cool.

I don't think I would want to do my own driving, will ask family members drive me around or take a taxi with people I know perhaps.

If you are crossing Hargeisa airport be so paranoid on alshabab. Do not wear Cimaamad and pakistani clothes because Alshabab created fear amongst the society.
BTW. I think you have purchased not genuine ticket as DAALO went bankrupt. Tigidh bugaa ayaa lagaa iibiyey!! Dad badan oo london degan diyaaradii oo kacday ayaa weli tigidho laga iibiniyey.
