And that is precisely the prediciment we have to avoid. I have always thought that people avoided Somalia becuase they were just waiting for the right opportunity to swoop in like vultures. And who would stop them - people like Sharif, Hassan Sheikh, Pig-liver, Riyaale? Right now, it's still a bit hot but after alashaydaan have been slightly chastened (but not eradicated) they wil buy up everything for peanuts.

The solution is to go down the grass-roots route and start from the bottom. We have nothing to lose since we're already dirt poor. We should say fck off to all and any foreign "investment". Limit spending on foreign goods (except valuable technology) to save valuable currency. Outlaw the use of foreign currency on pain of death. Also the issue of qat has to be dealt with immediately. A lot of money is wasted on the drug with no benefits and it all goes into ethiopia's pocket - it's ridiculous. Eritrea is a Pariah state and we can negotiate mutual infrastructure and energy deals. They have resources and they can act as a counter-balance against xabashi influence. We should also invest healiy in two things; education and health. A lot of children die far too much for it to be exceptable. investing in clinics and better schools will make sure we have the most important resource of all - a skilled workforce. SL's low key status would be a blessing, we could do all this before we're even noticed. But it requires a strong government with balls, grit and savvy. Other than Ina waraabe (and he's mad), I doubt anyone in politics has the backbone. And the population is worse. They've become so used to low standards taht they see every useless white elephant project as a sign of progress.

I don't know what the SL budget is, but I remember someone saying it was around $200 million per annum. I can't vouch for it's accuracy but let's assume it's correct. That would give a hypothetical SL government $1 billion in 5 years. More than enough to do what I've suggested. Infact it might even be more if you fix the currency issue.
