SOMALI CURRENT / Tuesday,19
A man from the Somali region of Somalia was last night killed in the capital of the break-away state of Somaliland in what the local authorities termed as targeted killings.
This latest killings by unknown assailants is seen by the ONLF, the armed group fighting the Ethiopian government as a targeted killing facilitated by the Somaliland government, a claim Somaliland distanced itself from.
The regional coordinator of Maroodi-Jeeh, Mohamed Mohamud Ali said the man was shot dead at 8:30 in the evening using a pistol. “We’ve launched investigation into the killing and we expect to get to the bottom of it,” he said, adding that they arrested a number of people suspected of perpetrating the incident.
Mohamed did not mention the killers, nor the deceased. He added that the killers fled the area immediately after the attack. Last night’s cold-blood attack marks exactly a month since similar incident involving a victim from the Somali region of Ethiopia happened in the capital Hargeisa.
The regional coordinator of Marodi-Jeeh noted that such mysterious killings were new to Hargeysa.
Meanwhile, the relationship between the Somali region and Somaliland has been improving, particularly since last year when they signed security and economic pact.
