Ambassador Mohamed Osman Omar, who was Reer Hamar or Banadiri as they like to call themselves nowadays, mentioned in his book "The Road to Zero" a conversation that took place between Siad Barre and his Reer Hamar " Banadiri " barber during the last days of Siad Barre’s rule.
The representative noted that during the Siad Barre era, the Reer Hamar were protected by the authorities because they paid "bribes to government officials." Because they are a small group that is linked with essential economic activities in the capital, they became an identifiable target after the overthrow of the Siad Barre regime and the collapse of recognized authority in the country. For instance, their shops were looted and there was no authority to protect them from such attacks .
