I am trying to collect some data or rough estimates on Somaliland community.

I know majority of the people are nomads or live in the rural areas.

My questions are:

A) On average how many household or nomadic families share 1 km square of land?

B) What is the estimate of an average nomadic family's size of livestock or animals?

C) If each family can be allocated certain land for settlement, grassing, herding and farming, what size is enough land (reasonable of course)?

The reason I am asking this is because I think it's possible to manage both the land and its people better and introduce new settlement policy, which could reduce conflicts, qabyalaad (most qabyalaad wa tola'ayeey or crooks to instigate Mr X "war miya laga xog weyn yahay" )

I will soon post my thought (floor plan or map) of what I'm thinking.

My vision is to become a Somali policy maker in five years time Insha Allah.

Being from Australia is bit disadvantage because Australia does not really invest nor finance ideas in Africa unlike the US (US-AID) or UK (DFID). They always want to know if your idea is for the Southeast Asia or the Pacific region.

I do have some ideas but I wanna hear from others especially how they estimate their own, what other information they have, and so on.

you need to identify variables of importance before you construct a function for this to produce meaningful results. even within somaliland there is different topographical land. If I were you I would concentrate such a study on the Ogo-Hawd belt within Somaliland.

Solve f(B) first and integrate with f(A) and then use f(C) = (B|A)

Dooxada Nugaal is actually more in SL than PL. I do say 70-80% of the valley is in SL and runs across four states (Sool, Togdheer, Sanaag and Waqooyi Galbeed where it enters the ocean (23km north of Berbera)).

From this end it runs 415km across Somaliland where as in PL it runs 170km from north Garowe to Eyl where it enters the ocean thus 30 percent.

It also depends how one defines 'dooxada Nugaal'.

Is it only the grassing savanna which is predominantly Togdheer, Sool and Nugaal (north of Garowe is where the savanna ends)?

Either way the valley is mainly in SL.

When I was living in dhoqoshay (village) the average nomadic family had 50 goats/sheep and few camels. Outside the village people had around 100 goats and over 20 camels.

The reasonable land for each Somaliland grazing family is over 5 km square. I remember when I was a kid our goats should do grazing at least 5 km away from the the village.

The overall population density for all of Somali is 13 people per square kilometer which is quite low, but none of this matter as urbanization is the key and intensivation of agricultural output the real solution, we can't have every habar iyo tom family working their little land patch of 2 hectars.

Anywhere where water flows and is relatively flat has agricultural potential.
To settle nomadic populations you will have to provide/grow feed for their animals and services for the people.
