Meru County Governor wants Kenya, Somaliland agreement over miraa sale

Postby Maroodijex » Thu Jul 21, 2016 2:39 pm

Meru County Governor Peter Munya has urged the Kenyan government to promote the Miraa market in Somaliland that buys most of its Miraa plant from Ethiopia.

Munya who was speaking at Kabachi in Igembe North Sub County during the burial of the late Mzee Peter Njilu Mbutura said that his main objective visit to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, was to persuade the government to remove the obstacles that have hindered the export of Miraa to the country.

He noted that the Miraa market in Somaliland is worth USD400 million, with 99 percent of the supplies coming from Ethiopia because Miraa from Kenya, which is highly preferred there, is charged 300 percent while the one from Ethiopia is charged only 100 percent duty making it impossible for the Kenyan market to compete.

According to the governor, he has convinced the national government to appoint a technical committee to review the duty in exchange to some form of recognition of the Republic of Somaliland by the Kenyan Government.

He added that he will be presenting a report and a brief to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the new development and visit to Somaliland in due course.

“I will be presenting a report and a brief to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the new development and visit to Somaliland in due course so that we can explore the possibility of doing miraa business there,” said Munya.

Miraa farmers in Kenya are already suffering following a ban on miraa in the United Kingdom in 2014 and the reduction of its trade in Somalia, which was the biggest market for the trade.

This comes at a time when Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud wants a total ban of miraa in his country citing devastating impacts of miraa consumption in his nation.

This is a great opportunity if Somaliland leaders have the wherewithal to come up with a strategy to link this to getting Kenya help with regards to AU recognition.

Somaliland buys Khat anyway, but if the government is able to strike a deal with Kenya whereby Kenya helps Somaliland put its case in the centre of the AU discussions. Then I have no issues with gets all our Khat supplies from Kenya and ban Ethiopian khat.

A ban on Ethiopian khat imports can become a leverage to get Ethiopia to also help Somaliland's cause.

Somaliland buys Kenya's addictive drug to get diplomatic Recognition in return.

This reminds me of the opium wars between China and Britain.

The khat farmers don't chew, they live in a comfortable home, their kids go to top schools studying to become lawyers and doctors. Meanwhile the Somali is neglecting his family to spend $20 a day to sit in khat houses like a goat grazing on the drug all night, while the poor Hooyo is left to raise 10 kids by herself.

Instead of banning this drug or coming up with a solution so the new generation doesn't get hooked, some of u guys want to continue this devasting cycle for a small political gain from a non relevant country?

Hell no! God I hate Jaad, I have no doubt it shares the blame for majority of our societal problems so no need to add to it especially when I heard the kenyan one is more potent than the Ethiopian kind.
