I've begun my project on making a Somali History Podcast on Youtube, Need Help..

Postby ZubeirAwal » Wed Apr 04, 2018 5:25 am

So far I'm writing the script for 01, which is on the ancient pre-islamic period, and I came to a point where I needed to define what a Somali is?
The term Somaal means to go and milk as Tumaal means to go and strike the anvil, so what make a Somali, Somali? I'm trying to be as objective as possible, and isn't the word Somali medieval? With evidence only going back as far as the 10-14th centuries?

Help me out brothers and sisters.

Am not sure. I saw years ago a text by ibn Masud the geographer mentioning a Somali slave in Yemen accompanying an Arab.

That text was from the 800s A.D

And so the word 'Somali' was mentioned in arabic?

Good luck and do your research so it serves academic purpose unlike so called Somali historians who put crap together to serve their tribal supremacies.

I believe you are going in the right direction. Indeed it makes sense Somaali means to go milk same way Tumaal means to strike or beat hence blacksmith (strike metals).

I believe in ancient Somali culture people had names derived from their professions, lifestyle and looks, manners, news and fortunes.

This is no different than midevil England with names such as Farmer, Smith, Laborer, Baker, Cook, Dean, Doctor, Hunter and so forth.

Somaal, Tumaal, Xogmaal, Etc.

i read from arabic book, if memory serves me right ,it was in the same book that talked about sheekh isxaaq , the author mentioned the original nme of somal, that it was named a xabashi military governorn who was sent by the xabashi king to control the area from zeila to xafun ,his name was Soma ben Tesemma .the name was written in arabic as صوما بن تسمة

maybe someone can look it and see if this name even existed in the xabashi history.

we have to find other sources, especially from the xabash archive, i remember i downloaded a book that have all of their kings chronicles, maybe that guy soma is mentioned there.

if i come across something similar i will update you here.

by the way, what happened to your great thread that contained hundred of pictures of somaliland.

it should be sticky thread.

so sad this forum is full of trolls and faqash.

we need a forum dedicated to somalilanders.

someone need to document all the great stuff made by somaliland before some envious faqash delete them and they will be forgotten.
