I recently went back to Somaliland after more than a decade in the Qurbah. I was surprised to see how Hargeisa has tremendously changed, it got bigger and populous. The downside though, the city became messy and the urban planning is nonexistent.
The country is Nabad. You can I stroll around the city very late at night and you won’t be bothered by anybody except few Ciyaala Xaafad here and there who gather in the dark at night and if you are not cautious, they would sneak up on you and snatch your phone and run away otherwise you can put on Macawiis and walk from point A to b without Qashqashaad.
I visited all the major cities in the country and they are all safe. people are busy with their daily lives. Unlike in the diaspora Fadhikudirir, it is hard to see people discussing politics and contrary to what Social Media may have us believe nowadays, you don’t see anybody denouncing or wishing Somaliland harm.
There are a lot people who are in opposition to the sitting president, how his admiration is running the country and the direction it is going but everyone supports Somaliland and the people are committed to protecting Somaliland’s independence at all costs.
All is well and good, but you can sense this muted feeling that the equal power sharing is lost. When you talk to people you can sense the grievances and injustice increasing number of people feel. However, it seems like the people in the country adopted a pragmatic approach to Somaliland politics.
On the other hand, the corruption is very rampant and disturbing specially in the local government. I was told all the businesses pay taxes, but that money never gets invested back into city’s infrastructure. Some of the roads you are better off not to drive, you have five feet deep potholes all over the city center roads.

We in the comfortable west sometimes forget that for the majority of Somali's it's a daily struggle to survive.

The first thing I do when ever I go back to my country is eat a good meal of hilib geel , haafayn or suqaar. Ilaa aan intaa mid kamida soo cuno I don't feel at home. I usually spend some time in hargeisa or berbera before I even contact my family . Murqaan is best at its first day fresh alla waawayna.

I remember my first day in hargeisa. When I went to marfishis straight from the airport people were looking at me , I was wearing a winter coat so too much sweat. The more you sweat the more Murqaan. They asked me too many questions and i became too nervous so i started to lie . I acted like fat kid from a rich family in burao looking for a room to hide from the university . Then suddenly when I about to pay my bill I asked the woman "waa imisa euro walaal " instead of imisa dollar , every one was laughing at me. The oldest guy said to me warya caadi iska dhig gabadhana rubuc baan ka qaadanaya ee bixi danahaaga baad yurub uga timee nasii sooryada . And I did . Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk


The moral story eat like local , live like a local, talk like a like. And dress like a local . Other wise you you will end up in the gated community , it's an other jail.

Haven't touched qaad since 2010 I believe. Last time i chewed was driving through Sheikh mountain at that time listening to qaraami. What a feeling.

Ian not into qaad, it's matter of availability and peers . In Canada a bug country qaad or now garaabo is consumed in Somali ghettos, outside of that you will rarely see qaad, and most Somalis drink or smoke weed and such.

Last time I chewed was some 14 years ago, maybe my entire life I chewed total less then 10 times and the side effects are ugly. Bleeding inner jaws and tongue from biting yourself chewing the cud like a goat for hours, penise shriveled from the effect of the drug, ashy dry face and lips.

XKeyse, you've had beginner symptoms when you received those cuts. That was one of the worst thing I hated about the drug. I then started just chewing a third of the stick and throw the rest away as it was the softest. People wanted me to skin it down to the end but I'd rather waste two thirds of a stick and go through 6 pieces than get cuts.

Good old days, now the only people that still chew are addicts who are willing go pay 90 quid for a 200 grams. That's probably worth 3 pounds before the ban. The rest of the guys just turned to parties and drink. It beats chewing I suppose.

You can afford that because it was legal back then in UK , in Canada its illegal and very expensive so literally you have to eat the stick.

Even in Hargeisa the younger generation don’t chew the khat as much their father did. It’s only those uneducated dropouts, the Ree Badiye and older folks that chew it daily. The educated ones, most of them don’t chew Khat, even if some of them do, they chew it on Thursdays for fun and abstain from it the rest of the week.
