Desertification on the Sanaag plateau in northern Somalia

Postby 1nkaarQabe » Sun Apr 06, 2008 8:04 pm

Desertification is a reality in Somalia. These photos were taken near the villages of Bahdan and Hadaaftimo on the Sanaag plateau in northern Somalia in August 2004. Less than ten years ago this area was valuable grazing land, now it is all but destroyed. Pastoral experts at the NGO Horn Relief believe that the area can be rehabilitated through a combination of replanting trees to control wind erosion, controlling grazing and constructing small rock dams to control water erosion. All of this will take capital which Somalia does not have.

In the meantime we need to reduce the incentives which lead to the indiscriminate felling of trees i.e. the money to made from the charcoal trade. We can reduce the demand for charcoal by using solar cookers. Users like the type of cookers sold by Sun Fire Cooking. A household can pay for a solar cooker in less than one year through the reduced purchase of charcoal. This is a win win situation for the household and the Somali environment.

I want Somalia to become a desert. The more arid the land is, the harder people work...look at the papaya-infested South.

Fruits make people lazy and the less of it, the better for Puntland.

The state known as Maakhir is establishing itself but Maakhir Coast is going through a transition. Charcoal trade all over Maakhir fueled by Puntland for the last 7/8 yrs is the cause of the desertification of Sanaag minus the whole global warming.

Between allsanaag is only 1 site which doesnt write its own content and steals from other articles off laasqoray/dhahar especially about Maakhir State.

WTF are you rambling about

Swaths of forests and land have been burned for charcoal for the last 10 yrs. PL and its militas made it easier for traders since their involved in the business. Since global warming is tied to human influences charcoal trade and the outcome of Sanaags "desertification" would have a correlation. Right, Boon kid?

Between "Global Warming" has always "existed", whether in the case of Sanaag traders are speeding up the process by a few hundred percent(s). Global warming in itself is still contested plus Africa let alone Maakhir isnt a industrialized region/country and 80% of the greenhouse gases are emitted from industralized regions/countries. Maakhir was never a desert and land being burnt would in my opinion increase the process of desertification.

Between I was replying to Gemini where PL & Somaliland has a role in Sanaags "desertification".

Boon kid chill and stfu dumbass

^^

LD kid learn how to read. I'm the one who told You that desertification will have a effect on global warming but global warming will not accelerate desertification which You implied. However maybe You didn't mean that but You're slow and have difficulty writing.

Slow down on the kalun as it has obviously wreaked havoc on Your brain cells and sperm count.

I dont BELIEVE in GLOBAL WARMING :?

I mentioned it but it (global warming) wasnt a topic I was going to elaborate on. Boon kid who said desertification doesnt have a role in the drying up of land in Sanaag?

I know the charcoal trade which you have little knowledge about in Maakhir had a huge impact on Sanaags "drying up". If they (outside sources) want to class it as desertification then be it. But since human actions (mentioned a million times) are the only proven role for Maakhir degradation your little boon tit for tate is retarded.

Desertification has no impact on global warming, but it does affect the people in the region.

Neocon

Puntland has been establishing solar cookers as an alternative to cooking with charcoal, unfortunately the problem is charcoal trade is very lucrative so it's not gonna be easy to ban it all.

yea man, I never disagreed with you that desertification leads to less oxygen, only that desertification in somalia has minimal impact on 'global' warming, but a massive effective on the local population.
