The Majerteen is a Somali clan, part of the Harti group of the Darod clan.

The Majerteen primarily inhabit the province of Puntland in the North East of Somalia, along with southwestern Somalia, the city of Kismayo, and the Ogaden area in Ethiopia. The clan has produced two Presidents and two Prime ministers since 1960, also a Sultan. They held many other government posts in the sixties and early seventies. Siad Barre considered the Majerteen a major oppositional power to his government. Haji Awale Liban the creator of the Somali flag was a Majerteen. Also a Majerteen was Osman Yusuf Kenadeed, the inventor of the first Somali script. Today the clan plays a key role in Puntland. Territory:

Majeerteen members are found in their traditional territories such as the northern regions of Bari, Nugaal, Mudug. The Majerteens also have the southern port of Kismayo as their traditional territory

The sultanate of the Majerteens played an important role before the colonialism of Italy. The clan has produced two presidents and two prime ministers since 1960, also a Sultan and a King (Boqor). They held many other government posts in the 1960s and early 1970s and continue to play a key role in Puntland.
Boqor Ismaan Mahamuud's sultanate was nearly destroyed in the middle of the nineteenth century by a power struggle between him and his young, ambitious cousin, Keenadiid. Nearly five years of destructive civil war passed before Boqor Ismaan Mahamuud managed to stave off the challenge of the young upstart, who was finally driven into exile in Arabia. A decade later, in the 1870s, Keenadiid returned from Arabia with a score of Hadhrami musketeers and a band of devoted lieutenants. With their help, he carved out the small kingdom of Hobyo after conquering the local Hawiye clans. Both kingdoms, however, were gradually absorbed by the extension into southern Somalia of Italian colonial rule in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

Population-around 2,500,000
