Vegetation and agriculture have always led to great civilizations and densely populated regions. Thus, why Southern Somalia (anything south of Galgaduud) is densely populated compared to anything above it. How the fuck can anyone expect for barren regions where the annual rain fall is less than 0.5 ml expect to have massive populations? What are the people and their livestock going to be eating? Rocks and sand? Its foolish and wishful thinking to claim large populations for regions where there is limited resource to support these populations.

Want to know the population of any given city or region in Somalia? Google map it. Buurhakaba alone has more population than Garoowe.

I couldn't resist it. I've already taken a lot of heat for my borderline MJ-phobia remarks in the past, what harm can come from one more?

You're all just estimating..until Somalia has a proper functioning government iyo conducts a census we'll never know for sure. Maybe one of you guys should trek over there and count all the heads..instead of throwing numbers around.. :|

Garowe is the capital of the smallest region in Somalia, you think MJs are going to refute that its not a large settlement? Considering the quality of roads, water, new irrigation projects, and sustainable public works, Garowe is actually far more hospitable as Buur Hakaba today (hence the influx of Rahanweyn into the state) and may be of equal size (not counting rural population). Google earth is from 2003 for Garowe and major development began exactly around that time, and its still a decent sized town considering its location (larger than every settlement in Galguduud). Today it takes 2 bus routes to get around Garowe and hosts over a dozen major NGOs.

Puntland's population circa 1998 may have hovered easily around less than half a million but 32% of Bosaso's population are Rahanweyn and Jareerweyn; influx from non-MJs from the south alone has given the region a boost of 250,000+ over the last 5 years alone. If you wanna ask what's MJ population, its what Xoogsade said, but Puntland is multiple times more dense than it was in 1990 or 2000.

According to "Puntland Facts and Figures," a booklet published by the UNDP and World Bank in 2003 the population of Puntland State was estimated at 2.4 million. The population growth rate of Puntland State then was very high due to the influx of people from war-torn southern Somalia and from neighboring countries. However, since 2003 the situation in war-torn southern Somalia is still the same, on the other hand, Puntland has experience an economic boom fuel both by influx number of returning refugees and IDP's. So in my opinion the 2.4 million estimate from 2003 needs an update.

As always Paidmonk is on point
