Even James who can barely be called a friend of Marehan in most of his analysis theorizes the same based on written history:

Marehan lost a lot of resources first fighting for Ahmad Gurey in Ethiopia and then afterwards defending Harar from the Abyssinian/Portuguese army. My theory, which has no evidence to back it up but it's my theory anyways, is that the Marehan lost too much from these and the people they ruled defeated them and took over, except their "hometowns", where they all moved to after that.
