GALKAYO, Somalia Dec. 18 2011(Garowe Online) – A man was shot and killed Saturday outside of Galkayo, the provincial capital of Puntland's Mudug region when he refused to stop at a check point and shot at police, Radio Garowe reports.
An unidentified man refused to stop at a check point and shot at police before getting gunned down in the suburb of Halabokod outside Galkayo.
Mudug police chief Abdirashid Geele told reporters: “Three grenades and pistol where found in a bag on the man, after being shot down before injuring an officer.”
The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
When asked about the culprit’s motive, the police chief commented that, “It was obvious that the man was a criminal as he wanted to harm people.”
The area was populated with IDPs with a police station close by. Mr. Geele told reporters that the investigation is still continuing.
In September, Puntland security forces raided Galkayo neighborhood on a counter-terrorism operation that have led to the arrest of 18 Al Shabaab members.
Last week, Mudug Governor Mohamed Jama Yusuf "Tigey" condemned Galmudug authorities for a series of crimes, including kidnapping a young boy.
