Somalia: Puntland seizes 5 illegal fishing boats, 78 Iranians arrested

Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) apprehended 5 illegal fishing boats and 78 fishermen off the coast of Bossaso on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

PMPF Coordinator, Admiral Abdirizak Diriye Farah, who spoke to press on Wednesday, stated that 5 illegal fishing boats and 78 Iranian nationals illegally fishing off the coast of Qow 20km from Bossaso were apprehended by the Puntland coastal forces.

“The fishermen we arrested were 78 in total all Iranians, along with 12 Somalis who were protecting the illegal fishing boats,” said Admiral Farah on Wednesday.

Admiral Farah also stated that the PMPF would continue operations to capture illegal fishing boats that have “overwhelmed” Puntland and Somali waters.

At Wednesday’s press conference Puntland Deputy Fisheries Minister Musse Geele Yusuf welcomed the PMPF’s capture of the illegal fishermen.

Former Special Envoy to Somalia Ahmedou Ould Abdallah stated in 2008 that there was “so much irregular fishing from European and Asian countries.”

It is the first time that authorities in Somalia have seized a number of illegal fishing boats and arrested dozens of foreign nationals linked to ille gal fishing in Somali waters.

The nerve of these people, first it was the Koreans, now it's the Iranians!
Puntland should lock them up in the new Qardho prison and keep the 5 ships. :x

Somalia checking crime ? Big step for us. Somalis coast line is our greatest asset apart from our rivers.

By the way Puntland's coast resources include 50% of the Somali total fisheries.
The area around Xaabo is the chief earner in fishery extraction in the Somali peninsular.

Yep, our coast is our greatest asset, hence the PMPF!
I think Puntland has 3 fish factories, i'm sure more are on the way since every major city in Puntland will have a fish market.

When the PMPF is not busy chasing foreign fishing vessels, pirates and human smugglers, they're engaged in Humanitarian Aid, which includes delivering water and food provisions to those affected by droughts. They've also built schools in the areas they're stationed in. PMPF :stylin:

Finally my cousins in Qandala, Aluula, Hafun, Bargaal, Banderbayla, Eyl, and Gara'ad get to :eat:

Let the world worry about world problems piracy and so on, and let us focus on fighting the things that locally effect our coastal population, illegal fishing and dumping by foreign vessels the things the world continues to turn the other cheek to.

About time the Puntland government come to it senses and put our maritime forces to good use.

Even though I criticise PL sometimes it makes me happy that my Harti cousins are doing well.

Ku dayo Puntland! :win:

Fish is really valuable but it is unkown to somalis. European countries have been screaming about EU regulations on fishery for so long. Some of these countries come to our waters in order to dodge these regulations, totally draining our resources without us knowing! Sadly it is not just Europeans that fish illegally in our waters, it is the whole focking world!
