
Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) apprehended 5 illegal fishing boats and 78 fishermen off the coast of Bossaso on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.
PMPF Coordinator, Admiral Abdirizak Diriye Farah, who spoke to press on Wednesday, stated that 5 illegal fishing boats and 78 Iranian nationals illegally fishing off the coast of Qow 20km from Bossaso were apprehended by the Puntland coastal forces.
“The fishermen we arrested were 78 in total all Iranians, along with 12 Somalis who were protecting the illegal fishing boats,” said Admiral Farah on Wednesday.
Admiral Farah also stated that the PMPF would continue operations to capture illegal fishing boats that have “overwhelmed” Puntland and Somali waters.
At Wednesday’s press conference Puntland Deputy Fisheries Minister Musse Geele Yusuf welcomed the PMPF’s capture of the illegal fishermen.
Former Special Envoy to Somalia Ahmedou Ould Abdallah stated in 2008 that there was “so much irregular fishing from European and Asian countries.”
It is the first time that authorities in Somalia have seized a number of illegal fishing boats and arrested dozens of foreign nationals linked to ille gal fishing in Somali waters.
