- Marehan are not from Shilabo "settlement."
- Shilabo "settlement" itself is peripheral to Shilabo "territory."
- The settlement was historically established a ~100 years ago to politically "unlink" Marehan & Shilabo territory.
- It was the Abysinnian garrison overlooking "Higloole" in the broader "Doh" or Doobawayn territory between Faf (Abysinnian garrison: Qabri Dahar) & Baaarey (Abysinnian garrison: Kelafo)
- The settlement of "Shilabo" is at the border of historical Shilabo valley; it is really as much Shilaabo "territory" as Beled-Weyne is Mudug "territory" or Garowe is Waqooyi "territory."
- Marehan, however, are both from and are the absolute majority of Shilaabo "territory."
- The "grazing" land is the "territory" is the gold, the diamond, and the silver. It is why Marehan even was or is still in "Shilabo."
- The permanent wells of "Kabacad" (Laasocaano to Ceel Baxay ) are northern veins of Shilaabo territory.
- The permanent wells of "Ernuune" (Garasle to Fadhigaraadle) are the central veins of Shilaabo territory.
- The permanent wells of "Ceelgaab" (Ceel Habreed to Lababaar) are the southern veins of Shilaabo territory.
- 2/3 of the permanent wells and 80% of the grazing land---which is the entire importance to Shilaabo---are in the hand of Marehan. [Kabacad + Ernuune]
- 1/2 of the rest (southern Ceelgaab) no one uses since Marehan were expelled in 1982 (Ceel Hebreed wells) and is a no man's land (quite literally even ENDF will destroy any settlements or "berkad," or if they don't Marehan will; 12 Cayr berkeds have been destroyed between 2015-2021). [This borders Matabaan district of Hiiraan]
- The other 1/2 that is left (northern Ceelgaab) is contested between Bah Geri and the Cayr whom they allowed to settle in the furthest part of where Marehan were expelled from in 1982 (Lababaar wells).[This is part of Feerfeer district bordering Shabelle River]
Notice;
1. Shilabo doesn't exist. Nor does "Kelafo." Both of those settlements would form from the Abysinnian garrisons on top of Baareey (Barri on the map) and Higloole (Hegloti on the map).
At the time of the map, given by the formation of the colonial lines, the standoff between Italy and Abysinnia was already underway and the Abyssinian [and Italian] "garrisons" were probably established but in the formative stages, i.e. had not become a permanent feature or transitioned from military camp to outpost or fort.
The Abysinnian garrison on top of Baareey looking downstream the Shabelle River at the Italian garrison at Makanne (Makani on the map) would later become the settlement of "Kelafo" (interestingly the Italian garrison at Makanne would later become the settlement of "Beled-Weyne).
[Noteworthy Detail: Both Baareey and Makanne were two Somali Bantu (Beesha Jareerwayne) shamba or farms. Today the 2 communities are known as the "Reer Barre" and the "Makanne" of the "Reer Shabelle" umbrella or beelwaynta "Shiidle"."]
The Abyssinian garrison northeast of Higloole looking east over the Shilaabo territory in the larger Buuro Region of Marehan facing the Italian garisson at Sinadhaqo (Sinadogo on the map) gowould later become the settlement of "Shilabo" (interestingly the Italian garrison at Sinadhaqo would later Become the settlement of "Dusamareb").
2. Notice between this land north to Warder northeast to Galaadi east to Gaalkacyo southwest down to what would become the settlement of "Dusamareb" and west to whaf would become the settlement of "Shilabo" there is only one clan identified in the map---the clan of Mareexaan (Marehan on the map).
When you hear people say "Dhuusamareeb Mareexaan bay ahayd" or " Shilaabo Mareexaan bay ahayd" or "Gaalkacyo Mareexaan bay ahayd" or "Wardheer Mareexaan bay ahayd" or "Galaadi Mareexaan bay ahayd" inevitably this is what they mean;
The territory is still Mareexaan for all intents and purposes---we have just been "politically" alien to all the garrisons built surrounding our land.
Oh, and this Marehan land between ∆Shilabo - ∆Warder -∆Galadi - ∆Abudwak is not now or has ever been called by Marehan as "Doh" or "Doollo."
It was then and is still now known as "Buuro" (Bur Region in the map).

Re: Sade Ugaas instituting shir for his people of Garasle, Korahe woreda, Sumale kilil, Ethiopia
You are absolutely correct which is why even sharing it is revolutionary. My perspective or the "Marehan" perspective over the land and territory to which they are implicated in the central plateau has been more attacked and silenced since colonialis,even targeted with "erasure," so much so that I participated in this forum myself as a Marehan and for 99% of my entire membership in this very forum, I logged in and found "nothing" that spectacularly wrong with Guhad122 writings and statements on this land until I walked on my own two feet and saw hundreds of kms of this land probably with no picture or video ever taken of it but in which you could not find a single human that was not Marehan except for spouses or relatives of the Marehan in the land.
Guhad122's "7 wells of Doollo" pitch was a regurgitated reference for a very, very, very clever reason. It was a predatory marketing scheme that transplanted Marehan ownership of 95% of the territory west of the road between Shilabo and Warder settlemrnts and subscribed it to Makaahiil who were in 5% of that territory.
For you see the "7 wells of Doollo," i.e. "Doollo Region", is merely a "locality" with a distance less than 20 mileson the road between Warder and Shilabo settlements.

Imagine the distance between Warder and Qabri Dahar settlements is the same distance between Caabudwaaq and Warder settlements. Between Warder-Qabri Dahar, Makaahiil shares that with practically the bulk of Rer Abdille, yet btw Caabudwaaq-Warder is almost entirely Marehan.
Imagine the distance between Warder and Shilabo settlements is the same distance between Saaxo and Warder. Between Warder-Shilabo, Makaahiil shares that with practically all of Bah Geri, yet btw Saaxo-Warder is almost entirely Marehan.
Guhad122 with his "7 Wells of Doollo" regurgitated whipped out like a Nazi Pass one's life depended on everytime Marehan equity was brought up in eastern Somali Region was the manipulative, but ingenious cold, calculating strategy of an evil genius. And he didn't even come up with it---they all respond that way which shows it was a strategy that was formed, designed, and handed to them.
Which is why following my geocoding experience in that land walking on it with my own two feet I declared war against"Doh" and "Doollo" predatory marketing schemes.
The land ain't "Doh" and "Doollo."
The land is focking "Buuro" and after a century, it is focking being said again.

Excellent find, excellent. I have the document & I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but really all of this is further corroboration from all official records the land was called by everyone what it's inhabitants still call it : BUURO.Hulkujir wrote: Sun Jan 08, 2023 12:57 pm Gubbet Bur, Buuro, Burgesole, its all the same thing, its an area belong to MX which is from Wardheer to Caabudwaaq.

Buuro as in "Hill Country" because of a chain of 11 volcanic hills which serve as the heart and center of Marehan on the central platea (eastern Ethiopia and central Somalia). [These hills also makes one of the best grazing lands in Somali territory because of trapping moisture and above average rainfall].
Buuro of which the most prominent are these 5 Bur;

Burgeesoole is just "Buur Geeso Leh" ("Horned Hill"). It is one of the 5 most prominent hills forming the perimeters of the 11 hills dotting Marehan territory between Warder-Galadi-Abudwaq-Balanbale-Shilabo.
Some of the other 5 also identified in that 1873 map by Ravenstein sourcing french travelor Antoine D'Abbadie are Raqo (Rako) & Golwayn (Guluwin) below;

We overcame the last 120 years where it really counts (displacement/uprootment) but with some serious battle wounds and sacrifices (moving back from Ceelgaab in Shilaabo & from Walwaal to Galaadi) but probably the most damning and which has galvanized my interest is the effect on the Marehan spirit that has caused them to even rule out equity/investment/value in land THEY STILL LIVE IN FOR A REASON (it is their "home") so much so we even accept others calling our home name we don't call it and do not accept.

Read this discussion linked below (especially 2nd page and following) after reading this topic and have a discussion with me about the subjective decontextualized nature of Somali historical "memory";
https://www.somalispot.com/threads/bees ... ex.142864/
It is a discussion between an HG/Cayr and a Xawaadle---both "peripheral" or "marginal" to Shilabo grazing and/or the large backdrop of Marehan vs. Ethiopia or even between Ethiopia vs Italy waged on "Marehanland"---yet they both implicate the effects or consequence Marehan has suffered over 80 years in their discourse surrounding (what is to this history about Marehan and Ceelgaab) their peripheral/marginal/subjective "local" conflict.
Waa yaab at how bastardized Somali historical memory is.
For example, in this topic we talked about the 1982 capture of Balanbale by Ethiopia which was a famous international incident. We have seen posted here "Ogadeni/Bah Geri" elders in SHILAVO town today saying Menguste harried Marehan from Ceelgaab, etc---
---yet in their small peripheral/marginal "localized" narrative--between them as "Hawiye" they are not only "relevant" to this history but are the only relevance.
One boy, the Cayr, even says "I pushed them to GARASLE" [the subject of this topic]---waa yaab---the boy not even displaying "basic" understanding of the issues involved like the fact Garasle is continuing Marehan equity, real equity not like the ahistorical Dhusamareb was yours nonsense, or that Garasle and Fadhigaraadle are the heart and soul of the best grazing in the entire central plateau and something astronomically more valuable than his lands. In short, in his self-absorbtion from the "periphery" he thinks Marehan is looking EAST to Guriceel and Dhusamareb or that he is the "object" at the "center" who has what is "wanted." He displays no basic understanding of the reality HE is the one being KEPT from what Marehan has WEST of them in Fadhigaraadle, Lassacaanood, Ceel Baxay, Ceel Dibir, Cilaanle, Raqo, Qorof, etc.
This is Somali historical memory in a nutshell; extremely subjectively reinterpreted even bastardized; the periphery/marginal is the center of the story, the palace is the outhouse for the one who lost in the evolutionary battles for resources in the past and the poor antagonist is the main and center protagonist, even "hero."
If this history presented here in this topic using so much available national and international evidence is so bastardized in such discussions as linked above -- what hasn't been in Somali tribal "folklore" masquerading as "history?"

Central Somalia Population by Clan
1. Clan boundary today:
(The boundary between Hawiye and Darod, in particular between Darod/Marehan and Hawiye/Habar Gidir is very important to keep note. That "boundary" is more than a clan boundary and lies at the heart of this conflict.).

2. That clan boundary as drawn by Italian traveler Robecchi Brichetti in 1880's.

3. That clan boundary as drawn by the Italian military during World War I.

4. That clan boundary as drown by the British military during the end of World War II.

5. This is a bigger projection of the British War Office map from the end of World War II.

From 1880 to today, there is a general, continuing "natural" clan boundary between Darod/Marehan and Hawiye/Habar Gidir. In none of these scientific, on the ground mapping shown in the last 4 maps was Marehan passing beyond a point west of Dhusmareb whereas Habar Gidir were at Dhusamareb and everything east of it and at times points immediately west of it but always east of present Cabudwaaq.
The importance of this continuing historical general boundary line between Darod and Hawiye in central Somalia cannot be underestimated. This boundary "line" represents so much more than clans and lies at the heart of all types of equities which feed conflict.

Central Somalia population Density and Settlement pattern
Because population estimates in Somalia are controversial, I am presenting density with settlement pattern to show an outline supported by most authorities on Somali population estimates.
Since this is about an historical overview, I am also going to use two different eras, with population density from the most cited of recent estimates (UNDP 2000) and for settlements from a 1960 malaria field study.
For settlements, it is important to show they have not been biased by modern development schemes but actually show the same settlements existing today organically formed due to human reasons.
1. Population Density
The line for population density is a perimeter/boundary line between dífferent clusters (low density is separated from high density}

2. Population Settlement
The line for population settlements is the slope in XY graph (towns/village dots are the intercepts)

3. Population Market Access

4. Urban and Rural startification

Once again, the "boundary" that presented itself in clan stratification in central Somalia continues to resurface in central Somalia population settlement, density, access to markets, and even urban vs rural differences.
That boundary line is even where the bulk of the Hawiye, who occupy all the territory east of it to the coast, seemingly have based almost the overwhelming majority of their own "settlements" right near the Darod/Marehan.
Always keep note of this " clan boundary" line as it represents much more than clan stratification.

Central Somalia Livelihood Zones, Vegetation Index, and Access to Water Resources
1. Livelihood Zones generally in Somalia

2. Relevance of Addun vs Hawd

3. Livelihood zones in particular in Central Somalia

4. Central Somalia vegetation index or health of grazing

5. Central Somalia historical access to strategic water resources.
Again, because this is an historical overview, it is important to see what "caused" the features contributing to conflict today. This is a 1960 rough, but scientific, on the ground mapping of strategic water wells ("pozzi") in central Somalia in a malaria treatment project.

By now, I am sure the "clan boundary line" is very hard to ignore having continuously presented itself as "more" than a clan boundary line. Again, keep note of this boundary line as being an invisible boundary of immense magnitude regarding the equities in central Somalia.

Central Somalia geological, geomorphological, and precipitation Features
1-3: Central Somalia geology, types of acquifers, elevation, and climate
West of the "clan boundary line" is primarily basalt limestone, shallow acquifers containing water more near the surface, is higher in elevation forming the end of the Ogaden plateau or tabeland, and relatively wetter considered part of "Steppe climate." Drinking water is also less saline or salty.
East of the "clan boundary line" to the coast is primarily gypsum beds, acquifers containing water need to be dug deeper, is declining in elevation to become coastal plains near the Indian Ocean, and is relatively dryer considered part of the "Desert climate." Drinking water becomes more saline the more east one heads towards the coast.

4. Central Somalia average precipitation and rainfall

5. Central Somalia water, sanitation, and boreholes
Water and sanitation resources are again almost completely representative of the "clan boundary line" and, in particular the vicinity of Abudwak city, contains the vast number of functioning boreholes in central Somalia. Boreholes are different to dug wells. Dug wells are shallow and sometimes temporary, particularly if hand dug, Boreholes are strategic water resources that can only function with deep acquifers with vast quantity of water reserves.

There is a story in central Somalia and that story begins with the "clan boundary line" which only introduces what is a profound and extraordinary contest of finite resources and equities almost completely privileged to the Western 1/4 of the extant land known as "central Somalia."
The "clan boundary line" is at this point a real and natural, if invisible, "boundary" in central Somalia separating two completely different landscapes uneven in elevation, geological formation,and even types of sedimentary and geomorphological basins. Keep note of this "boundary."
Yet, the boy in that discussion linked above thinks he "pushed" Marehan to Garasle rather than "he" has been "kept" and is BEING "kept" from Garasle, from Fadhigaraadle, from Laasacaanood, from Cilaanle, From Golwayn, from Dhudub, from Qorof---waa yaab the bastardized, subjective nature of "folklore" reinterpreted as history.

Re: Sade Ugaas instituting shir for his people of Garasle, Korahe woreda, Sumale kilil, Ethiopia
From D'abbadie in 1873 and his map of Bur Region w/ the wells of Bur he mentioned then as
-Ellale
-Rako
-Guluwin
-Abta alle
Still called BUURO by Marehan who are its only inhabitants with the wells identified by D'abbadie today still called
-Cilaanle
-Raqo
-Golwayn
-Cabda Caale

And visiting Raqo near my family's historically continuing village;
Yet these people still continue to believe Marehan was in Xarardheer, Ceelbuur, even "east of Dusamareb" when that is your reinterpreted false narrative to mask the real equities that have been fought for and evolutionarily gained or lost.
You are the one who has always wanted and continues to want to go WEST to our prime grazing land held in trust ever since evolutionarily won.
We have no historical or present interest going EAST of a point few km outside of Caabudwaaq town where "Hawd" grazing---ends!
