Somali lawmakers complain of abuse by government soldiers

Postby Hiiraan boy » Wed Jul 11, 2007 9:39 am

Mogadishu 11, July.07 ( Sh.M.Network)-Some of the Somali lawmakers based in the farming town of Baidoa, 245 kilometers south of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, expressed that they would not continue enduring mistreatments inflicted on them by Somali troops in the area.

Asha Ahmed Abdalla, a Somali lawmaker, said several Somali parliamentarians who were intending to fly from Baidoa airstrip have been abused and briefly denied flying.
“It is unfortunate that Somali troops treat some of us brutally and we find that unfair because it is a duty on the federal government to intervene in such situation,” she told Shabelle on Wednesday.

She said it was a clear violation against the country’s legislators. “We will not continue putting up with such brutality against us,” she said.

Somali parliament speaker, Sheik Aden Madobe, reportedly promised the government would so something about the complaints.

The news comes as surge of grenade blasts rocked Mogadishu’s biggest open-air market, Bakara, where one civilian was killed and more than 6 including police officers were wounded on Wednesday.
