A question to any Hawiye forumer:

What powers do the Hawiye elders hold
To what extend are they respected or listened to
Why have they not been involved during the Hawiye interclan fighting and battles that took place with other clans?

If they have, then what is the reason why they were unsuccesfull.

Every clan has clan elders which make important decisions in tought times and are there to generally keep the peace.
Any problems that may arise between large groups of clans (even smaller ones) they tend to come together and find a solution or common ground.
During the Isaaq clan wars in the 90's it was them and elders of the Gadabuursi clan that helped to put an end to it.
What i do not understand is why the Hawiye elders haven't had any success during the years and years of Hawiye conflics and issues.

This thread is not meant to bash this clan but rather to find answrs to these important questions.

There are Hawiye elders who do speak out against the Tigrey and the warlords. They are well respected but they don't have armies of their own. To get things done you need to have muscle and they don't have any.

The ones who do speak out are arrested and killed.

As for the comparison to Issaq, you got it wrong. Cigaal DID WIN the civil war by using an alliance of clans to gang up on the Garxajiis. The Garxajiis leader was forced to quit and leave for Konfur where he became a Vice President in Caydiid's government.

In the south, there was NO CLEAR winner in the civil war. Caydiid got the upper hand in 1991 & 1992 but the UN stepped in and allowed his enemies to replenish themselves. If the UN didn't arrive in SOmalia, the Somali civil war would have been done by 1993 at the latest. The Barre regime was effective destroyed in 1992 after their defeat in Afgoye and eviction from Somalia via Kenya. Ali Mahdi was gone and rendered ineffective. The Northern Darood clans got quelled in Feb 1992 when the USC liberated Galkacyo and captured Garowe.

Foreign interference is what never allows Konfur to settle down. Just when you think one group has got enough power to karbash their opponents into making peace, a foreign group sets in and snatches victory and peace away from the victor. It happened to the SNA in 1992, UIC in 2006.

I think clan elders are specialised in solving interclan conflict and not political conflict. What is going on in Mogadishu is a world political conflict. America is involved, arab league is involved, Tigree is involved, so called puppet government is involved, there is the Mucaaradka, aljihaad alshabaab. so how do you expect a clan elder to respond to this situation. All the players of this game have no elders that they can sit down with. I think this is beyond clan elders mind.

Hanad i agree that they are powerless in political conflicts, however could you class the hawiye interclan fighting as 'Political', or when they were cleansing out the Daroods and other clans from the capital during the early 90's?
Shouldnt the elders have played a role then?

The problem with Hawiye is that there are two types: Progressive Hawiye who want to advance and make Hawiye a powerful block and then there are the Yalaxows who are simpletons who are easily used by opponents to fight the AWs of the Hawiye.

Yalaxow represents Ali Mahdi who was used and abused by the Daroodismo Alliance of Siyaad BArre.

AW represents the Aididist wing that plotted and broke the back of the brutal dictatorship. Aidid (AUN) only mistake was to think that the Yalaxows could be freed from their inferiority complex and allow them to seize their destiny. He spoke to them as equals and tried to talk sense into them instead of seeing them for the Dameers they are worthy only of a Karbash and heavy workloads.
