MOGADISHU (Sh. M. Network)-A car loaded with explosives has targeted to the African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu, witnesses said on Sunday.
Residents said the attack took place in former Somali University where a Burundian contingent is based.
Al-Shabaab Islamists claimed the responsibility of the attack. The spokesman of al-Shabaab, Sheik Mukhtar Robow Abu Mansoor, said one of their fighters wearing a jacket with explosives entered the Burundian base and another suicider exploded his car in the base.
He claimed that they have inflicted heavy casualties to the African Union soldiers, but the spokesman of AU peace keepers in Mogadishu Maj. Ba-Huko Barigye, said there was not a suicide attack, but confirmed to radio Shabelle that they have been attacked by mortar shells.
Witnesses said several mortar shells landed in Bakara market after the attack, but no casualties have been reported yet.
This is the second suicide attack in this year. A suicide attacker killed about 20 civilians in Mogadishu on 2 February when it missed its target last month.
