Ruralman - That's a good read, what books are those?

The first book is a journal/book called Africa Today Volume 23: History

The second one is a book called Djibouti and the Horn of Africa by Thompson, V, Adloff, R

In 1958, on the eve of neighboring Somalia's independence in 1960, a referendum was held in Djibouti to decide whether or not to join the Somali Republic or to remain with France. The referendum turned out in favour of a continued association with France, partly due to a combined yes vote by the sizable Afar ethnic group and resident Europeans. There was also widespread vote rigging, with the French expelling thousands of Somalis before the referendum reached the polls. The majority of those who voted no were Somalis who were strongly in favour of joining a united Somalia as had been proposed by Mahmoud Harbi, Vice President of the Government Council. Harbi was killed in a plane crash two years later.

i thought this was the reason.

^^ The majority of Somalis who voted to join Somalia was of the gadabuursi clan but many of them were expelled by the French because the French didnt want Somaliweyn to ever be born. It was the Ciise clan who wanted to stay independent because they felt threatened that all their power and livelihood would be faced in competition with other clans that they couldnt compete with for jobs IF Djibouti did join Somalia.

I was always under the impression of Gadabursi. It's clearly that they are among the educated elite, but they're also fierce fighters. Imagine the isaaq and ciise ganging up on you , that means attack from both east and west, and defending yourself well and not losing one inch of land. this further more proofs that you need strenght, you can't survive with politics or education in Africa
