Atleast 35 killed in Northern Somalia clashes

Postby Coeus » Wed Dec 08, 2010 12:31 pm

At least 35 people have been killed and 40 others injured in clashes that erupted between rival clans in northern Somalia.

The casualties that have been dramatically rising in the past few weeks are reported to be mostly children and women.

The clans are from Puntland and Galmudug and live side by side in the town of Galkayo and neighboring border regions. However, there have been enduring animosities between them over the ownership of land and access to water.

Officials from Galmudug accuse Puntland -- a semi-autonomous region in the north of Somalia -- of using the forces they have lately trained to counter piracy in the region for attacking them.

Although Somalia's President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed has made lots of efforts to resolve tribal clashes and bring about unity, parts of the capital and vast areas in the country still remain under the control of clans.

Since the former dictator, Mohamed Siad Barre, was toppled by warlords in 1991, the country has not seen a powerful central government.

Clashes between rival factions as well as famine and disease have claimed the lives of over one million people in the past two decades.

There are more that 1.4 million internally displaced people in Somalia, of whom over 300,000 area sheltering in Mogadishu.

The rumors are retarded. Both sides are accusing each other of using foreign mercenaries, blah blah blah.

The reality is that a while ago there was a drought in South Mudug, so clans from north of Gaalkacyo invited them to use their wells for the period being; those families ended up inter marrying and some land was given to the south Mudug families as gifts. Recently some of the younger generation of the south Mudug community attempted to lay claim to the wells altogether, and this sparked a war, which ended up badly for them; all they have accomplished was to ruin relations and create hostility with reer miyi people who otherwise had no ill will towards them unlike the urban people who harbor this clan hatred.

Somali's love their clan wars. You won't hear any anger about this, in fact you will hear bragging. Somalian_Boqor was bragging that they slaughtered the Sacad and you'll see AW talking about how they're gonna get back at the MJ's. And the worst part is in these wars the enemy is everyone from that clan. Some MJ is gonna get his cousin killed and to get back he's gonna go shoot some Sacad guy who has nothing to do with the war, and the Sacad will retaliate and the cycle continues.

Clan wars
